Will I lose my number at the end of my contract?

I'm currently added onto a family plan but my contract is up on the 1st of September. 

 

I'm planning on changing service to Verizon.

 

When my contract is up on the 1st, can I wait until the 2nd to go and port my number over or will I automatically lose that number on the 1st?

Once your contract is up, you go on a month to month basis. You do not lose your number unless you close your account. Your account will be closed when you port the number to Verizon.

So will I be paying for September's bill even though it will only be 1 day?
