What is the difference between transferring responsibility to another person vs. to another account?

We want to help shed some light on the Transfer of Billing Responsibility process, @JUSTAQ.

Thank you for the explanation, @MicCheck. With a Transfer of Billing Responsibility (TOBR), you have the option to transfer to another account or transfer to another person. There's not much of a difference, besides the fact that transferring to another account allows you to move the line(s) to another active account.

Info to know about transfer requests:

  • Your plan, features, and pricing may change depending on your service agreement or offer eligibility. For example, if you had multiple lines, but only one is left after you transfer billing responsibility, you may have to choose a new plan or no longer qualify for an offer or discounted pricing.
  • You may see partial-month charges and/or credits on your next bill after the transfer is complete.
  • You'll receive one final prorated bill, which covers charges up to the date the transfer of billing was completed.
  • You must separate wireless from any other services before you start a request to transfer billing responsibility.

Transferring to another person implies that the individual does not currently have their own account, so an account will be created by the transfer process. Transferring to another account implies that a different AT&T account already exists and the transfer will just add another line to that account.

Functionally, there's not really a difference.

Thanks for your response.  However, when I choose "transfer to another account," it gives me the option to create a new account, so a new account can be created either way...

I have 2 different account numbers. Can another person then take one of them and sign into or get their own ID to start paying for that billing account? If they sign in to MYATT app will both accounts show up together?

To clarify, you have two different account numbers, meaning two different bills?

You can transfer one of the accounts to another person. They will go through the same procedures as any new customers (credit check, etc.) and will then be the owner of that account, which will be in their name and they will be responsible for the bill. It will no longer be associated with you or your other account and they will create their own online ID.

Somebody can create their own access ID and start paying on the bill but that does not make them responsible because their name and their social security number is not on the account.

And no, if you allow access to one,   they sign into one account,  they should not be able to see the other one.

How do you separate wireless from other services like, internet, before initiating a transfer of responsibility?

@Tculberson  You call AT&T and ask them to decombine services. It can take at least a full bill cycle
