Voicemail Piracy

My brother called me this morning and left me a message. When I played the voicemail, it was NOT him. It was some foul-mouthed person definitely not my brother, even the voice was not an attempt to imitate him. Is there any way to report this to AT&T? I've visited their website which was a worthless rabbit hole. I finally found a phone number to call, but it sent me a text that linked with an information page that I had already seen.

🤦🏼‍♀️

So you're saying the voicemail that your brother left was somehow replaced with a voicemail with foul language that did not sound like your brother?

Please read that a couple of times and consider what someone else is going to think when they read that. Because I'm thinking that either your brother didn't indeed leave you an angry message because he was annoyed with you for some reason, or your *perception* of things is considerably *off* of normal.  🤨

There is something called “spoofing” where a number appearing on the CID is faked electronically.  Google it.

Did you get an obscene VM?  No doubt.  Did it come from your brother’s number?  No.

You may now remove your tin foil hat.

@skeeterintexas

I didn't think of a spoof number, and that the original poster was just making an assumption that the call came from a family member.  He might want to contact his brother and find out if he actually received a phone call from him this morning or not.

But an either case, definitely remove the foil hat

Hello @TomInSacramento,

We understand the gravity of situation, and we would like to get you all the help we can.

We would recommend resetting the voicemail to keep your voicemail safe. If in case the voicemail was not from known contact we would recommend reporting the number to AT&T.

In case the number is correct, we would also suggest your brother to file a report with his service provider.

Hope this helps! Feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

@TomInSacramento  Good luck getting ATTHelp’s to fix the problem. If the number was spoofed with an AI-produced voice there’s very little that can be done. Re-setting your voicemail won’t stop anyone from calling.
