Voicemail for Apple Watch set up through Family

I gave my young daughter an Apple Watch through Family Setup using my phone since she doesn't have a phone.  She has a standalone number, but I can't seem to set up voicemail.  When I called AT&T they said she needs a phone.  What is the point of having a phone number if I can't set up a voicemail for the watch?

Hello chonhy, we're here to help you with voicemail on an Apple watch.

Find out what your smartwatch can do when it's synced to your smartphone. With NumberSync for wearables, you can use your wireless number on your compatible smartwatch. Call, text, and even check voicemails from your synced smartwatch. And, your smartphone doesn’t even have to be nearby or turned on.

Explore more info on NumberSync for wearables:

Heads up: To use NumberSync for wearables, make sure your smartphones are linked to a user ID

  • After syncing both devices, you’ll get voicemails in your smartphone’s voicemail box. You can:
  • Get voicemail notifications on the synced smartwatch.
  • Listen to voicemail messages from your synced smartwatch.
  • Set up a voicemail box on your smartwatch. Keep in mind: when your smartwatch is synced with your smartphone, you can only access your smartphone’s voicemail.

AT&T Visual Voicemail
Smartwatches don’t support AT&T Visual Voicemail. You have to call into your voicemail to manage it and get your messages.

Feel free to reach back out if you have any other questions or concerns!

Please ignore the AT&T response.

They are addressing number sync which syncs the watch to your phone rather than having it use family setup from Apple which allows the phone to use its own phone number and act as a standalone device for your child.

Let me see if I can find any information for you. The usual setup for voicemail forwards calls to a secondary number. Retrieving voicemail you contact that secondary number and enter a PIN code in order to retrieve voicemails. And I have no idea if visual voicemail is functional on a watch, it is a built-in feature of iPhones.

Set up:

The only comment about setting up voicemail on standalone watch is on Apple forums.  It indicated that voicemail access has to be set up by AT&T.   Not with the usual "press the 1 on phone app"

I predict that 9 out of 10 customer service Representatives will have absolutely no idea how to do this, they will completely misunderstand what you're asking, they will not understand family set up for Apple watch. I would recommend you skip AT&T and talk to Apple first. Family set up an independent usage of the Apple watch is their baby. Service providers attempting to accommodate something they don't understand, and it's going about as I would expect.

BTW, you can send a voice message using the text feature by pressing and holding the microphone icon in the text box.   You can use this as a workaround until you get an answer from Apple and AT&T.

Thank you, formerlyknownas. Does AT&T only use visual voicemail? What about just receiving a playback of the message left? When I initially spoke to AT&T, the rep told me it was a functionality of Apple’s to address. That didn’t sound right but I called Apple anyways. Apple, of course, informed me that AT&T provides the service and would be the ones to speak to.
When I attempt to call the watch, I receive a message stating voicemail has not been set up. I tried to do this on the watch, but the pin doesn’t go through. I can record a greeting but it doesn’t let me complete the set up.

Okay the basics of how voicemail works on both AT&T and Verizon:

After voicemail is set up via a phone by pushing the number one and recording your voicemail message Etc, you are assigned a secondary number which is your voicemail box number.

You can either call in, or download messages onto your device (VVM)

Whenever you call in, enter your PIN code you are playing your voicemail directly out of that voicemail box (Entering a PIN code to get to the voicemail box seems like an awful lot to ask of a young child 😒) If you set up visual voicemail, the voicemail message is instead downloaded onto your device.  IPhones and pixels have both the audio and transcription available on those brand devices.

I realize that doesn't answer the more extensive question which is 'why can't you get the voicemail either dial in, or Visual Voicemail on your daughter's watch' . The simple answer is, I don't know that you can, but if it's possible, and it cannot be set up in the manner it is on a phone, then AT&T has to set it up for you.

And as always AT&T customer service Representatives may have limited knowledge of a specific device which is not set up using family setup as often as it is set up as a spoofed device, paired with a phone.

This is why I think Apple may be more helpful because it is their device, and their programming using family setup.

You may also find help at the Apple Community because you're more likely to find other people who are Apple users using family setup for their child and having the same issue. You also might try Reddit which I believe has an apple community section.

Unfortunately that's the extent of my information, I use Android.

There are others on this forum who are regulars who may have some experience using family setup. We can hope someone else will chime in.

Hi there, chonhy! Let’s meet in a Direct Message (DM) to discuss using voicemail for your daughter's Apple Watch through Family Setup.

Please check your Direct Message Inbox for a message being sent to you. Look for the chat icon next to the bell icon in the upper right corner of the Forums page.

In case you want to know more about how to set up family members with an Apple Watch so that they can call, text, share photos, and more without their own iPhone we invite you to view the details under Set up a family member’s watch when you visit Add an Apple Watch to Family Setup.

Be sure to keep an eye out for that message in the DM. We want to look into why voicemail won't work through Family Setup so that we can provide a definite resolution into your experience.
