Trasfer / Port Google Fi number to AT&T

Hi,

I am trying to transfer my Google Fi number to AT&T but I am facing a road block.

Google Fi provided me with a 5-digit account number. However AT&T requires a account number that is between 9 to 18 digits.

So I am unable to proceed with my request.

I am looking for some guidance to resolve this issue.

Thank you in advance.

There is no way that a 5 digit number is an account number.  That would be a PIN.   Try asking Google Fi again about the account number in addition to a PIN.

Unfortunately, JefferMC, you are wrong.  I am looking at my Google Fi transfer screen right now and I see two five-digit numbers.  Both the account number and the PIN are five-digit numbers.

In fact, the tool tip on the AT&T order page even states that the account number can be anywhere from 3 to 20 digits.  Unfortunately, while the person who wrote that is probably right, the person who wrote the code ignored reality and decided instead to demand that the account number be 9-18 digits.

I don't have the specs, I don't even know if this is in the ITU specs, but, again, Google Fi is definitely showing me a five-digit number for my account number and AT&T's own order page states that that should be valid (however, their incorrect programming (which, I readily admit, most programming is incorrect) is rejecting it).

A 5 digit account number?  It's hard to believe that Google Fi has an account number format that supports fewer than 100,000 customers.  So, either (a) it's not actually the full account number but instead some fragment of it that has to match the telephone number and PIN you give, or (b) it's an index temporarily associated with your account to allow the port to complete.  Since the number only seems to appear when you prepare to leave Google Fi, I'm tending towards the second interpretation.

JefferMC: I agree with your interpretation that it must be something temporary used specifically for transferring a number.

For others in this situation: I "worked around" the limitation by adding four '0's to the beginning of the number, which let me go to the next section of the order screen.

Unfortunately, there was another issue with my order and so I ended up having to call AT&T and spend a pleasant hour on the phone with Jessica as she canceled my online order and set up a new order.  Apparently, there is no limitation on her side as she was able to enter my 5-digit account number with no issues whatsoever.

At the end of the call I gave her the information about the issue with the website not accepting the 5-digit account number, which hopefully means that some day other people trying to leave the Google Fi Leviathan to join AT&T's won't have that specific issue.

Just for completeness: I was adding a line to an existing AT&T account which the rest of my family uses.  The issue with my order was caused by the transfer section asking for a Social Security Number.  I specified mine, because that's the only one that could have been relevant at that point in the order process, though I would be hard-pressed to believe how it could be relevant there, for transferring a number.  Unfortunately, the credit check section of the order process (i.e., the point in the process where I actually can believe that a SSN is relevant) didn't prompt for a different SSN, namely the AT&T account holder's, and so used mine, which of course didn't match the account holder's.

So, I also told Jessica about the strange design choice to prompt for an SSN, with the prompt not clearly marked that it should be the AT&T account holder's, where it doesn't make sense, so hopefully that will eventually be changed, too.

Just add zeros before your Google Fi account number to make up the difference.

Thanks, formerlyknownas.  That is, as I wrote, just what I did.

It just frustrates me that to use software one has to consent to being part of a human centipede.

(Wow, my original message was "Edited per community guidelines" for a metaphorical use of the word that describes what a vacuum cleaner does.  I have rephrased my expression of frustration to be grammatical, as the (¿automatic?) edit was not.)
