Start service with AT&T and port over from Verizon later on?

Was wondering if it is possible to port a number over after initially starting the service. In other words, if I keep my Verizon line active for a bit but later on decide I only need one phone and want to go with AT&T, is it possible to port my Verizon number over the new line # I got when starting AT&T service?

Thanks in advance!

Sort of. When you port your Verizon number, it will be a new line. You can then cancel your existing line but you can’t replace that line with the Verizon number. If you have an installment plan on your current line and cancel that line, the balance of the phone would be due.

Thank you for the fast reply. I was googling around a bit and learned about the $36 number change- would this include porting in the new number without having to basically establish a new contract?

No. Your Verizon number would not be a number you could change to. The only way to move the Verizon number is to port it and that means a new line.
