Pre-paid

I bouight a new phone, went to activate it, and found out it was pre-paid. I wamt the phone added yo my current plan, the plan I upgraded from. The on-line help is useless and chat is apparently not available.

I dont want to spend an additional $30, $55 or $75/month--I want the upgraded phone to be on the plan from which the upgrade wasd made..

So just insert your postpaid sim card. AT&T doesn't care where you bought the phone or where you use the phone as long as you pay for it. The only difference is if you purchased a prepaid phone and use it on postpaid they may not unlock it for a year

Your options are to be to call AT&T and deal with the long wait times on hold and request that they send you a replacement SIM card. Or you can order a replacement SIM card from Amazon, eBay or Best Buy. You need a nano SIM, or a three and one sim card so that you can punch out the nano SIM.
You then need to activate the new sim card with your existing number and plan

I decided to wait until 7:00 and get into the chat line. I was seen by the chat rep at 7:45.

The solution to my phone arriving with a different number and under "Pre-paid" was to just let the problem resolve itself. The first clue that it was going to work out was text messages from the day before began showing up in the in-box (I managed both phones). Even though the phones "my number" lists a completely different phone number.

AT&T's Customer Service Representative said the phones number was not determined by the SIM card or the phones internal "my number." Apparently, trying to think logically only made things worse,

The BB key one was never sold for prepaid, so 🤔 ⁉️

I've been activating two phones on my post paid account and replied incorrectly. The SIM answer shold have been for an alcatel SMARTFLIP I manage for a friend. In that case, the upgrade is for a phone that was lost and using the original SIM is not an option. Thank you lizdance40 for your thoughtful and relevant replies to this thread.
