Hi @philllip!

Welcome to the AT&T Community Forums – where we are ready to help at all times! I can definitely show you how to change your phone number online.

Before you begin

  • Please visit our support site article to learn all the details before changing your number as the process can change

After changing your number

  • There isn't a feature to provide callers with your new number. Callers dialing your old number will hear: The number you dialed is not a working number, please check the number and dial again.
  • Your myAT&T profile and Star Services codes reflect information for your new wireless number.
  • iPhone users: You must sync your device with iTunes. The Visual Voicemail feature won't work until this is complete.

Currently, these are the steps to follow to change your current wireless number:

To get a new number

  1. Go to Overview > My wireless.
  2. Scroll and select the device you want to transfer a number to.
  3. If you’re using a smartphone, tap See device options.
  4. Select Change wireless number > Choose a new number.
  5. Follow the prompts to get a new number

Hope this helps! Thank you for joining the AT&T Community Forums!

Short (but accurate) answer: Because that's what AT&T charges to change your telephone number.

Longer (but more speculative) answer: Because there are costs to AT&T when customers change phone numbers, so AT&T has a vested interest in keeping those instances to a minimum. AT&T has decided $36 is the right number to be palatable to those with a real need to change their number while being a deterrent to those who might change their number on a whim.

I get phone calls from unknown sources, and I want to change my number, but since I seen how much it costs, now I'm having second thoughts. I don't know how to block the unwanted numbers either.

Please help.

Trying to change my phone number and I get "For your security, we can’t change your number online or over the phone. Visit your nearest AT&T store to change it. (MNC_27)".

Why can't I change it online?
