Free tablet supposedly

I bought a new iPhone from AT&T inApril2015. Was told tablet was free and line was only $10 month. Sounded ok even though I did not need tablet. I share the plan with a sister and previously a mother also. Thought it would've nice to use since my old pc was pretty slow. My credit agreement only listed the iPhone. please note I haven't had a 2 year phone agreement on my phone for years. I pay them off early like I did with my current phone. Tried to cancel the line for LG tablet which I haven't used for 6+ months and was told there was a early termination fee of $78 on something that was suppose to free and I've paid for 17 months ???? I have been a ATT customer for 20+ years and are disgusted with their false misrepresentations and taking your money.

Hi @Yogagirl!

I definitely apologize for that happening on your account! I agree with you and I totally understand the frustration! Thank you for being a customer for over 20 years, I would like the opportunity to make this right for you and take a look into what might have caused this to happen!

When the tablet was included with the purchase of the iPhone, the device was indeed free of cost, it however requires the $10/month access fee to be used on the account along with the agreement for the 2 year contract.

An Early Termination Fee (ETF) is another way to fulfill a Service Commitment - it's not a penalty. Once your Service Commitment is complete, there's no ETF if you decide to cancel service. The ETF amount depends on the type of device you purchased and how much of your Service Commitment you've completed at the time you wish to cancel service. The ETF amount declines over time.

For further details, see AT&T Return Policy and Early Termination Fees including Cancellation of Service.

I’m truly sorry for the miscommunication on our part! If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to me through this post!

@rmgaub Why is it not a solution? You may not like the answer but it was accurate. Those "free" tablets come with a 2 year contract for data service. If you don't complete the contract, you pay an early termination fee.

Sorry - you are correct - I thought your case was like the countless others I was reading where ATT lied to the customer (like they did with me).  I misread yours. My apologies.

yogagirl here... the above was AT&T's  solution.  I bought my Iphone then they offered a tablet with "a $10 "data fee" and no mention of a 2 year contract. this is basically the "ETF" as they state it.   I did not have a contract on my account for years and pay off my phones  very quickly...  I did not use the tablet and called to cancel it and had to pay $10.00 X24 months to satisfy their nasty sale lies.  I will never buy another product from them!

All you have to do is read the offers...ETF is right in the offer

Cell companies generally do not give away or sell discounted cellular equipment without requiring you to have service on that device for a length of time (usually 24-30 months).

Selling cellular service is part of their business model... (not giving away free stuff).

If you thought it was FREE, why didn't you cancel after the first month? Why wait 16 more months?

(I can't control what salespeople say, but that's the catch for free/cheap electronics with pretty much any CELLULAR company)

I have a tablet that we got free with a phone upgrade a couple years ago.  It says on our account that there is no contract on the tablet.  We never use it and would like to take it off the account.  It's only costing $12.01/mo with fees, but if we aren't using it, I don't want to pay for it any longer.  How can we do this?  We got the tablet through Best Buy at their At&t counter.

@tsbell You need to call to cancel the tablet. It can not be done online.

IF it was more than a couple of years ago, but if it's less you might have a ETF (early termination fee) so double check.

You'll need to call or go into a store to cancel.
