You need the account owner’s permission to port the number. If you don’t care about keeping the number, just get your own number and account. The phone will work fine on a new number unless your sister reports it lost or stolen. Unfortunately, ATT considers the account owner to be the owner of the phone as well. You must work it out with your sister. ATT can’t and won’t intervene.

Thank you for the information. There is no way for me to contact her as she lives out of the country. I purchased my phone and have all legal back up necessary if need be. So, I can just buy a Verizon card and re set my phone up with the new number?

If the phone is no longer on installment plan, then you can request to have it unlocked in order for you to use any other provider.

But since the phone is still under your sister's account, the phone needs to removed from the account first.

If you are an authorized user and you know your sister's AT&T account PIN, then you may call AT&T and seek assistance.

I purchased the phone myself and as I stated, I have all legal documentation to prove that I am the legal owner of this phone. I am not sure why you are telling me that I need her pin # in order to put my phone on my own plan. My phone is unlocked and has been since I purchased it. I don’t believe AT&T has the legal ability to shut my phone down or lock it. If so, I hope they have a really good legal team!

You only need her account pin to port the number. If the phone is already unlocked, ATT can’t lock it. As long as the phone is compatible with Verizon, it will work fine. However, as long as that phone remains associated with your sister’s account, she could report it lost or stolen and get it blacklisted. It won’t matter what paperwork you have. If she reports it lost or stolen, ATT will put it on the blacklist. You need to get that phone removed from her account one way or another. I don’t know if ATT has a great legal team or not but they have a lot more money to spend on lawyers than you do, I bet.

If said sister or AT&T tried to say my phone was stolen from her... If AT&T shut my phone off, my being disabled and barred from calling an ambulance, well the sad possible outcome there, well that would make for an interesting (Edited per community guidelines) against the sister and the phone company. Thank you again for your help here. There is unfortunately no option to contact that person so, wish me luck and the chips will fall where they may. Stay safe and happy!

I found the answer! After a long talk with AT&T customer service.... because I purchased my phone “unlocked” and I have the documents to prove that I purchased my phone I can simply move it to my own plan without the hassle of trying to get my sisters account and PIN numbers! I hope this ordeal I have been through helps someone out there with a similar situation. Wishing everyone good health, peace and happiness!

as long as it truly was an unlocked phone if bought from someone like bestbuy it’s locked to the first provider who’s SIM card is inserted. At&t does not sell unlocked phones. The only true unlocked phone is from Apple direct sim free phone or from the manufacturer of the phone.
