Changes to AT&T unlimited plans & canceling service

I recently saw this article that talks about the price increase to the unlimited wireless plans.

https://www.att.com/support/article/wireless/000098770

The article mentions that I can cancel my service because of the price changes and if I have an installment plan on my phone I can simply turn in my phone and the installment fee will be waived.

On Friday of last week I called the number listed in this article to talk about my options and was told that I could in fact cancel my service and mail in my phone and my installment fee would be waived. I said I wanted to take a couple of days to decide if that is what I would like to do. Today I decided I wanted to go ahead and proceed with canceling my At&t service so I called the number listed in the article. I was transferred to the loyalty department in which I was told that I could not do this because my phone is older than 14 days old.

I'm confused because the article says nothing about that. Has anyone had any luck with this?

You should call back and talk to another rep. The first one was wrong.

Be sure to port your number to the new carrier before canceling.

Yes, the one you spoke to today. The 14 day return is if someone changes their mind about a phone they bought. Your situation is different and the 14 day return does not apply.

I want to do this as well, but how do I port the phone number?

I’m sure they won’t unlock it without paying it off.

@Downonfarm

Porting number and unlocking the phone are two different things. Check the process and the requirements before you do anything so you don't regret it later.

To port a phone number you have to have your account number and your port pin which you find in your online account or by dialing *p o r t

This thread is about turning in your phone because the cost of your plan increased. There will be nothing to unlock, because you are not keeping the phone.

If you do want to keep your phone you absolutely do have to pay it off in order to unlock it.

(You do have to factory reset your phone when returning it)
