BOGO Offer Directv Requirement

My wife and I are wanting to consolidate to one carrier, and we would be bring one other family member in as well. I see there is a BOGO offer, but it requires Directv (or internet I'm told). We got rid of cable and DO NOT want to add any extra cost, and we're happy with our internet as well and do not want to switch. I don't even think AT&T hi-speed internet is available in our area. My wife has had AT&T for a good 15 years and she really wants to stay with AT&T but Verizon has a BOGO offer also that doesn't have that type of requirement, so it's hard to argue for AT&T if we're going to have to pay full price for phones for the 2 new lines we want to add. I had spoken to a rep earlier in the day who recommended that I call back with my account passcode and ask to speak to the "Customer Loyalty" department to see if we could get that requirement waived. When I called back and spoke to another rep they just kept telling me that it requires the service and giving me different options for adding service. They would not transfer me to the loyalty department and just kept telling me there is no way around the requirement  and there is no way to contact directly. We're talking about adding 2 NEW lines in addition to the 2 that we already have plus switching to a higher cost unlimited plan, but I can't get a deal on a phone because I don't want to add Directv? With all the carriers competing and offering the same BOGO deals you'd think they might consider matching a deal.

I am in the same boat.

I was all excited about the BOGO offer and told my wife (phone upgrade) and son (new line) about it.

When I logged into myATT all I see is BOGO (see screenshot).  I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get the BOGO until I googled it and chatted with an ATTrep.

I don't have DirectTV and don't want it.

The screenshot just says BOGO.  When I click on the ribbon, it just outputs details about the iphone.  No explanation about DirectTV being required.

What is also confusing is I saw this ATT help article that mentioned past BOGO offers but didn't mention DirectTV either.

DirectTV is required but they don't explain it here either?

I am very confused and disappointed too.bogo.JPG

Yeah, you would think they would but they won’t and if you get some rep that says they will waive the tv requirement, don’t believe them. I can guarantee you will be back here in 3 months asking where your BOGO credits are. Perhaps just be patient. They do have BOGO’s without the tv requirement from time to time. With the holiday season coming up, I bet they will have another.

So wait till the TV requirement is dropped.  The BOGO offers change very frequently.

BTW:  These lines you are thinking of adding, are they on a competing carrier?  MVNO’s of AT&T are not new lines and would not qualify as such.

What about your plan?  I don’t know which one you are on, but my plan is the Mobile Share Value Plan, and has net $15 line fees and plenty of data to share.  I also have a discount of 22% not permitted on unlimited plans or other carriers.   It would cost so much more to change to a new plan that any saving on phones is wiped out.  Do the math.

Just think on the feasibility and you can understand why existing customers aren’t included in these BOGO offers:

The ‘churn’ is under 2% of customers.   Offering a free phone deal is an advertising write off.

At&t  has 147 million connections.  Any sale to existing customers is not a write off.  Sales are done to unload old stock.  No one wants ‘old stock’ they want the newest tech.

BOGO offers are to steal customers and add business to make a profit off us, not save us money.  It also forces customers off older plans onto current offers, which in many cases, is more expensive.  In my case any phone savings would be wiped out by increase in plan cost.

Do the math on service.  You mention Verizon, which has an 8 gig shared plan, then unlimited, which cost more than AT&T.

Consider coverage.  Free phones are of no value if you have no reception.

@AlainBarriere

You should note the link you posted does not include current dates.

Any sales/BOGO promotion is also listed on the sales pages for phones.  Read carefully.

It doesn’t help that one probably wrote the offers. 😖

I hope no one here went with the ATT BOGO because they’ve screwing people over very badly on it. They went as far as to tell me I’m eligible for the BOGO since I had DirectvNow, we CALLED in and were a pair of iPhone 8’s. Pay for 1, the other is free. 2 months goes by and we’re being charged for 2 new phones, no big deal, I’ll call in and see what’s up. ATT then proceeded to tell me that I wasn’t eligible for the BOGO because I already had DirectvNow (for 3 weeks) before I requested the BOGO. But in the very details of their own BOGO it says to already have DirectvNow to qualify... it’s a classic bait and switch. After 13 years I’m done with ATT. Oh, I also hired a lawyer, hopefully he can win me something since I paid a lot of money to cancel after they screwed me over. I know this post is almost a year old but maybe it can help someone else thinking about their fake BOGO.

Pardon?   DirecTV NOW has never been and is unlikely to ever be a requirement for any BOGO offer.

Uverse or DirecTV satellite has been required in the past.   TV has not been required for most of the 2019 bogo offers.

A new line is always required.

This year the unlimited plan has been a common requirement

You're wasting money on a lawyer (at $300 an hour) when a BBB complaint is free, and neither will help if you didn’t actually meet requirements.  You are limited to arbitration, which At&t pays for.
