AT&T Hotspot

I turned on Hotspot on my phone and within 22 mins all of the 3GB allotted data was used up.  I looked at the log and the majority was used up in .49GB chunks.

This does not seem possible.  Is something wrong?

What were you doing in those 22 minutes?

No reason to think anything is wrong. It’s very possible to use that much data in 22 minutes. What device or devices used the hotspot and what were they doing?

We are here to help with your mobile hotspot concerns, jkadwell.

Thank you to the ACE's for the help.

We do understand how important is to know how much of your hotspot is being used when having a device connected.

Hotspot data usage is directly related to the activities you do on the devices you are tethering to your hotspot. Using the amount of data in a short period of time, may not mean something is wrong. It will depend on what the connected device was doing at the time it was connected to your hotspot. For example, streaming or gaming can use a lot of data.

You are able to manage your hotspot mobile data and set usage alerts. Every device connected or tethered to your mobile hotspot uses your plan’s data allowance.

We hope this information helps! Please let us know if you have any other concerns.

Thanks,  I was at a hotel and I was the only person using the hotspot.  I was simply browsing on websites. The only unusual thing I did was run a speed check a few times.  Probably 3 times.  As you implied, I should have been able to browse the internet for hours.

This did not answer the question.

Did you connect a tablet or a laptop to your phone for the use of your hotspot?

If you ran 3 speed tests off of your laptop or tablet while connected to your phone's hotspot, that uses a tremendous amount of data.

Your other device would also connect for  other services while you are connected using the hotspot.   A secondary device doesn't know that it's connected to a mobile hotspot, all it knows is it now has Wi-Fi and can use data unrestricted.

Yes, I was using a laptop.  Other than the speed check I was reading the news.

I suspected, based on your response, it was the speed checks that used up the data.  I will run some tests next month and not do speed checks.

There are many other things a laptop could be doing in the background, so the speed tests weren’t necessarily the culprit. Even just browsing the web from a laptop will use much more data than browsing from a mobile device. All of those ads and imbedded videos so many websites have can consume a lot of data.

We'd be more than happy to give you some more context on your mobile hotspot, Jjkadwell.

Special thanks to our ACEs, formerlyknownas, MicCheck and sandblaster, for their expertise.

Our first recommendation would be to view our resource page on tethering with your hotspot

Our second recommendation would be to look at our data only plans. Since you used so much data in 22 minutes, it might help if you added a hotspot with more data.

Want a data-only plan for a wireless device? Choose one of these plans:

  • AT&T DataConnect: Choose a monthly plan with 25GB or 40GB of data for select devices and mobile hotspots. Shop now for one of these devices.
  • You’ll enjoy access to our fast, reliable, and secure nationwide 5G network at no additional charge.

We've also included a help page for hotspot plans.

Please let us know if you need further assistance. Thanks for reaching out to AT&T Community Forums!
