Are AT&T employees required to wear face mask while servicing customers?

Yesterday I went to AT&T Store No. PP58 in Chicago, Il on 52 and Lake Park. Cashier Joseph O waited on me but did not have a face on. I had on a face mask and gloves. I asked if AT&T had a face mask policy or rule for employees working with the public. He said no. I said, they don't require you to wear a face mask while talking to customers? He said no and of course did not bother to put one on. I am writing to find out if this is true and if so why, when so many people, even hospital staff, are dying from this coronavirus. We all have to work together to remove this sickness so we can all get back to our normal lives. If what Joseph O said is not true he should be told by AT&T to start wearing one. So my question is, Are employees working with the public required to wear face masks?

am leaving this comment on here hoping that this company will stop worrying about revenue and start thinking of the health of their employees. My immediate family member works for att business. There has been someone within that office building that has been reportedly testing positive for coronavirus. Now that is not my issue. My issue is that my relative has been working for that company for just over 30 years doing business customer service, and with other offices They allow them to work from home as I have another relative who works for the company as well. How selfish is it to have them work from the office and possibly spread this disease further so they can save a little bit of money. Meanwhile We are I. One of the hotspots for the virus (south Florida). They are working out of cubicles in a office room. I have 13 lines for my small business with att and now will be switching companies now that I see how they treat their own. Risking lives of their employees because they are too cheap to have them work from home. I will be reporting this to the national news as well to show the greed of this big company. It would be a little different if there was not a positive case of this diagnosed right out of the building to which they work. I am beyond irate and will go through any and all measures to make sure that the att community is aware of this radical behavior.

at&t does not require gloves or masks except if mandated by city,county or state. if you were that concerened then why put yourself at risk ? maybe the clerk didnt have a mask, maybe they are in short supply ive yet to aquire a mask because i refuse to purchase a mask for 60 dollars online that i could have bought for a mere 1.29 before the shortage

@Jame4314 I found this whilst Googling the issue:

Illinoisans will be required to wear a face mask in public when social distancing isn't an option.

I guess a customer and the employee could do a 'dance' by taking turns at the counter for products or paperwork.

Admittedly, both wearing face masks would be much simpler.

Face mask wearing is based on state and county regulations. If there is no regulation for the state or county then it is optional. If state or county mandates it then yes they have to wear one.

Even in states or counties where wearing a mask is required and penalty for not wearing a mask can be fined, there is always exceptions for those with medical conditions like asthma. Currently there is no way to tell who does and who does not qualify for a medical exemption or how any particular state or city is going to in force and unenforceable edict. Personally I want to make people comfortable so I wear a mask.

Even states that do require masks, can't dictate what kind. What is available in my area is primarily homemade two or three thickeness, cotton masks. Very few have medical grade, and no one has n95 unless they are medical workers. I live less than a mile from the Massachusetts border, and we frequently go up there to go to Big Y or to get gas oh, and Massachusetts now has a $300 fine for not wearing a mask. Many in law enforcement say they will not enforce.

Each state determines their requirements on face coverings.  Texas just put one in effect.  Before that, Dallas County had a face covering rule but other counties did not.

That being said, AT&T would have to follow whatever the area (city/county/state) requirement is.

@TimPaige

   What's the full mandate?    Almost every state requires face coverings in public if you cannot maintain social distance of 6 feet. There are medical exemptions.

Each business can choose whether or not they require masks in their establishment.
