What is the true cost of AT&T Apple Watch plan?

Everywhere you look it says add the Apple Watch to your data plan for $10 so I jumped onboard. After a nightmare of a time getting the watch activated I come to discover that my true added cost is $50! I am cancelling the watch service and downgrading my plan instead.

I would contact their retention Dept. They record all phone calls and you
are correct it’s $10/mo for a wearable and tablets to be added onto an
already existing plan.
However, if you are paying monthly payments on the watch, that would be in
addition to the $10/mo access fee. If you want to cancel that line they
will ask you to pay the balance of the watch or pay a cancellation fee.
In my opinion, you should just buy a smart watch outright and just do
whatever you want with it. Same for cell phones. The amount of taxes,
government & state fees, etc it’s crazy!!!

Thats the reason I canceled my cell watch plan too.  In WI, after all the government and taxes that they add for the watch too, just like you pay for the phones, its more like $20+ a month than $10.  Total rip off considering how often I'm going to be out with my watch and away from wifi (even my gym has wifi) and not  have my iphone with me.

I have the Apple Watch 3 and iPhone 8 Plus and I use mine on cricket. I get
pretty good range on watch on WiFi so I pay $40/mo for unlimited internet
with cricket and you can use your ATT devices on them as well. They haven’t
set it up for accessory devices yet, but they’re working on it.

ATT and Cricket are the same company...  As for apple watch on prepaid..  Apple does not want them on prepaid carriers.  They look at it as degrading the products value.

I can report that this run around is still happening.  I decided to activate my series 4 Apple Watch today (purchased direct from Apple) and was on the phone for an hour and a half.

First, the rep made the comment that where he's from, "only very rich people have apple watches, probably only the President has one".  He said he was from the Philippines.  Strange, rather unprofessional way to start the call...

Anyway he said I had to upgrade to a multiline plan for an extra $45 which I was ready for, and tried to explain it was only supposed to be $10 extra.  We went around and around and I asked for supervisor to which he said it wouldn't make any difference.  Long story, short, he finally got around to idea that he could add a wearable data plan to my account for $10 (I think his supervisor gave up with his back and forth and told him to offer me that).  I asked what the taxes and fees would be for that and he pulled up a list and started calculating and then announced it would only add $1.20.  So I said OK and after about 20 minutes of reading off IMEI and EID numbers to him again and again he eventually got it to take and the account was setup.

He also informed me that there was a $30 activation fee but I eventually wore him down in the call and he said he would credit me the $30 (though I doubt I will every see that).

The saga continued and after I got off the phone the watch never activated so I called tech support and they were finally able to get it activated (I had to accept the Terms and Conditions).  When I asked them to send me a copy of the T's and C's they also sent a link to my new billing statement and low and behold there was the $10 fee for the watch plan and my taxes and fees had doubled: went from $12.78 to $24.97.

I'm on the Unlimited and More Premium.  I switched to this from the old Grandfathered plan I have had since the first iPhone came out so I could add the watch.  Now there is no going back to the old plan.

Has anyone been successful in reducing the fees?  I guess I may go into a store and see what the deal is.  It may be time to change carriers, I've been an AT&T customer for more that 30 years and getting tired of all the hidden fees and run around...

Activation fee is unlikely to be waived.

Tax and fees should be about the same as your phone. And they should be more than you were paying on the old plan.

Adding a device will always mean prorated charges because you are billed ahead.  So the most recent bill would be for service not yet delivered in full.

I think the consensus is wearable should be activated in a store.

Thanks for the quick response.

I was comparing the fees on my last bill to the fees on the "Customer Service Summary" so that was not correct.  I went back the the Customer Service Summary from when I switched to the new plan a couple of weeks ago and I see that the total Ongoing monthly bill will increase $15.39, so not as bad as I thought.  Still fees that are 50% of the cost of the plan are kind of excessive and making re-think if I really want this.

I think I'll go check out T-Mobile tomorrow, I should be able to save $20/month if I switch, though I would prefer not to have switch...

Do you know what data rate you get to the watch with AT&T?

Sorry, wrong terminology... Do you know the max speed of the LTE connection on AT&T?  T-Mobile is advertising 512kbps which seems a bit slow but I can’t seem to find what the top speed should be for the watch...

Both (or all) carrier expect to offer LTE speeds
