Gear S2 - NumberSync Unavailable

Hey Guys -

After tons of research, I made my decision a couple of weeks ago and purchased a new HTC One A9 and Samsung Gear S2.  I have been really happy with the hardware I choose so far, but unfortunately not so much with the service.  Before posting, I searched around and saw similar issues, but not exactly like mine plus wanted to add my comments in, too.

Around Christmas, I received a notification that Numbersync was now available and asked if I'd like to enable it.  I did and followed all instructions to connect my S2 to my account.  After about 5 minutes, it was enabled.  5 minutes later, it said it was disconnected and currently unavailable.  I figured that ATT was just working on it.

The Issue

Since then, I've tried connecting to it a few times by:

- Going to Settings on S2

- Choosing Connections / NumberSync

- Changing NumberSync from Off to On

Once I do this, the option spins for 5 - 10 minutes and never does anything.  I've tried restarting the watch prior to doing this and get the same result.

Today, I logged into my ATT account and went to the S2 / Manage NumberSync section where I saw NumberSync was currently switched "Off".  I switched it to On and it turned green.  About a minute later on my S2, I could see it was starting to enable and showed a message about bluetooth being disabled, but then I got the same "NumberSync is Unavavailble message - how frustrating!!

Also - can I not use bluetooth / get my notifications when numbersync is on / enabled???

I alive out in a rural area, but have 3 bars on my phone, but have tried it at work in the middle of Nashville where there's full coverage, too.  I've considered trying to disconnect it from my account and reconfigure, but thought I'd post first.

What's the issue here?  Thanks

I would say its a watch issue since some features on the watch dont fully work with non samsung devices.

Thanks for your reply...

I understand your point, but based on what I've read so far do not agree with your statement about not fully working with non-Samsung devices.  From what I've read about NumberSync, both the phone and the watch communicate directly with the carrier - not themselves for setup.

Even if untrue, one of the Gear S2's main advertising points is that it will work "with smartphones running on Android 4.4 and higher with over 1.5GB RAM" plus lists my phone (A9) specifically as being compatible.  No where on the official compatibility page is there even a disclaimer or footnote about certain features not working - probably because everything else I've tried has worked - except this.

I'm sorry, but I cannot dismiss this feature not working based on that alone.  If you have a technical reason for the issue or know of any maintenance / development being done on it, I'm all ears (or eyes).  Thanks

You have the latest firmware on the watch right?

Others have had problems with numbersync also.  I would call tier 2 tech support and have them trouble shoot could be something on the backend you cant see.

Numbersync is really still a beta product as I had a gear s2 3g  and returned it do to numbersync problems.  Its like any new thing it will take time to squash the bugs.  I went back to my wifi gear s2 and gear s if I need to go running.

As far as firmware, I would assume so; but not certain.  The version I currently have is: R730AUCU1AOL3.  I'd assume that if there was a new one I'd get an OTA directly on the watch or the Gear app would push it. What is the latest version and is there a beta program, perhaps?

I guess I can try calling, but wanted to post here first before investing a couple of hours on hold.  Anyone happen to have a direct dial to tier 2+? 🙂

Thanks

@bzowkyYou are currently running the most recent software. You mentioned you were in a rural area in an earlier post. Regardless of having a few bars, NumberSync relies on the Enhanced LTE / HD Voice Feature. If you are not in a good HD voice area, then this will cause NumberSync to disconnect. You may be better off using the forwarding feature that is in the Gear Manager app rather than using Numbersync.

https://www.att.com/maps/wireless-coverage.html  Look at the map with the HD voice filter checked. If you are experiencing dropped calls, or static during your calls it is likely caused by the Enhanced LTE. If you are experiencing excessive battery drain, this could also be the culprit. You can go under Mobile Data and turn it off, however with it off you cannot use NumberSync at all. Hope this helps! Smiley Happy

So this morning I am having the same issue and come to the forums to find help. Unfortunately there wasn't much.

After troubleshooting my problem a little bit I notice a settings issue in the watch. Check for your issue but my issue was under Settings>Connections>Mobile Networks= Then set to always on!. My suspicion was to save battery life the watch would turn off mobile data and use wi-fi... this however disconnects your watch to the synced mobile network- again my oppinion.

I have spent over a month, countless hours, and lost money with this issue. I found that when Bluetooth is enabled I can't receive calls. This was not an issue when I first started using the watch in March. AT&T claims they have never seen my issue. Well this forum process that to be a lie! Apparently the numbersync service has had issues going back to 2015! And they are still not resolved! There is a department that is like the ICU of hospitals that had my case....they are supposed to respond by 7.26.16. [Per Guidelines:  Keep it Relevant and Appropriate]. ATT continues to sell a service that they know doesn't function properly and refuses to compensate customers for their fluffed up services! But I bet if I didn't pay the bill...the button to cut my service off will work just fine! Really thinking about Verizon....

Number sync is a added feature that your not charged for. There not selling you number sync there selling you a watch with a cell radio and it's own number.
