Activate a gift of someone else’s Apple Watch

If someone gives me their old Apple Watch because they bought a new Samsung phone, can I pair that watch with my iPhone?  And will it need a separate phone number (like my iPad Mini has, which device I never use)?  Very grateful for any suggestions. Thanx!

Yes you can pair.  As Bluetooth or LTE.

Which you choose depends on how much functionality you want.

If you want to be able to use it fully,  away from your phone, yes you will have to pay for an additional line of service for a companion device which is $10 a month plus the same taxes that you're paying on your phone.

You have to be on a postpaid plan. If you are on prepaid you will have to migrate to postpaid otherwise the device will be Bluetooth only and will only operate when your phone is nearby
