WGN and other terminated channels owned by Nexstar

Discovered last night that Uverse took away WGN. I am disgusted. Can't even find a link to view the current announcement of channel changes. Cost keeps going up, yet number of channels provided keeps decreasing. I give up.

It has been over 3 weeks that WGN Channel 9 has been off your service due to a contractual dispute re price. Do whatever you need to do to resume this channel. At the price you are charging me, I should be able to get WGN. I plan to cut the cord shortly and completely do streaming.

Yes, the reason you no longer have your local channel is because of a contract dispute with your TV provider.  This is something that happens no matter what live tv provider you use cable/sat/streaming.  They all go through these disputes.  The only way you can avoid this is to get an over-the-air antenna.  Fubo TV and YouTubeTV just went through a similar dispute with the same provider.  Dish network is still in dispute with this provider as well as Directv Sat & Streaming services.  Because of this dispute, you have the opportunity to get a 1-time credit of $10 if you go to www.tvpromise.com unless you plan to no longer have live TV you will still be affected by these disputes.  To the provider(Nexstar), this is just a game to them to try and make more money to line their pockets that is why your TV provider is trying to negotiate the price down so you will not see a large cost increase to your bill because that affects all of us and I for one do not want to pay anything extra.

Search before you start a new thread. Your answer is already in the forums.

Yes, there is a rebate being offered.

No, I won't tell you how to get it.

Have fun with your new provider! BTW, since U-Verse isn't cable, you already cut the cord.

I think there is still an on-going carriage agreement battle between Sinclair Media, who apparently owns the local CBS affiliate in your area and U-verse. It's common practice for the station owners to pull their network feed to force the provider to meet their demands. As soon as the new negotiations are agreed upon Sinclair will re-establish their network feed. No telling on how long that will take. You should have seen a crawler at the bottom of the screen informing you that it was U-verse's fault but in reality, it's both, station owner and provider disagreeing over new carriage fees.

If we knew your location or the station’s call letters I bet we could Google it because

I am about to switch service after 13 yrs with ATT due to the fact that the local Fox Channel and ability to use the Fox Sports app using U-verse is not capable. Amazing that you can’t watch the women’s World Cup when being an ATT customer. Also, need an option before college and pro football starts up in just over a month from now.

Is it that your local Fox affiliate is owned by Nexstar and is not allowing DIRECTV/AT&T U-verse to transmit their content during the negotiations, or is this some technical problem?

If it's the former, do be warned that Nexstar is having fights with everyone, as one of (if not the) largest station owners in the country.  I think I heard that Dish is currently it the same situation at this time.

@Mswoller

If your local Fox affiliate station is owned by Nexstar, there is nothing you can do. AT&T and DirecTV are forbidden from the channel because the owner is demanding much higher rates. Switching will not save you as all providers go through these negotiations and local affiliates (especially Nexstar) are doing this more often. And NOBODY knows when it will be back as that is asking to predict the future on when Nexstar gives permission.

Now if it is a technical issue, that is another matter. Post specific details about the issue and we will try to provide guidance.

I’m going thru the same thing because my local FOX station is owned by Nextstar. We’ve all gone thru these blackouts before with local stations in the past, however I don’t think I’ve ever experienced one this long before. It’s been over a month here, and I think that’s pretty ridiculous given the amount we already pay for cable. Really makes one want to stop just thinking about cutting the cord and actually do it!

Nexstar went through a similarly-long one with AT&T just a few years ago.

As far as cutting the cord, you did that when you dropped cable. All providers, and I do mean *all* providers, raise prices. Heck, even some of the DTC services like Disney+ and Netflix have raised prices in the last year or two.

No, U-Verse is still cable.  Have a set-top box that is required, not streaming over the internet.  DIRECTV is the streaming service.

Except U-Verse IPTV *does* stream via its own proprietary system. The DVRs and receivers don't have traditional tuners as cable boxes do.

These response posts seem so pro Direct TV/ Uverse.  Like there’s a whole section of their customer service group actively responding on this “forum”.  Many are extremely condescending or just lying - like (in my experience, Uverse) customer service reps (not all, but many).

Fact to Direct TV - holding out for lower prices (for yourself) is going to take you down.  Since you own nothing, how have you charged such high price LO these many years??  Now, and 2 years ago, (for 2 of my channels), you might just have to pay more - YOURSELVES - to service your customers, (cutting into your phenomenal profits from the past) to service how ever many customers you may be able to salvage from this “negotiation” debacle.

Take a loss or lose it all.

@Sassy22

Their operating costs go up then so do our bills. Simple economics. They cannot just "take a loss". Channel owners have raised their prices with each carriage negotiation. Realistically a TV provider (AT&T U-Verse, DirecTV, or even Dish, Comcast, etc.) cannot simply absorb those costs. That is why costs keep going high with all TV providers. It is how the TV industry is setup and feels like a losing battle with us customers at the bottom of the hill.

Yes Nexstar is one of the worst when it comes to this. Since TV providers do not own the channels that is why there is a clause that programming/channels can change at any time. It means we as the customer are not entitled to any particular channel ever.

I do not want them or any TV provider to just give in to these channel owner's demands. Especially not for channels that are FREE OVER THE REGULAR AIRWAYS. How about those of you who just cannot live without those channels take the loss and offer Nexstar to pay the increase for all of us who are against it? If not then try a antenna or watch one of the many other channels. As I have pointed out many a time, most of us did not go to pay TV for our locals but what our locals do not provide. I personally would be fine, maybe ecstatic if Nexstar just took a permanent hike to stop the cycle.

And before you get any false ideas, this is a public forum. Most of us are just other consumers, including those marked with the ACE tag. We've just provide so much guidance for each other that we've been recognized as a reliable source of information or perspective. So the posts are not any part of their "customer service group".

Heck, it's also how the grocery store is set up. The cost of gas goes up and guess what happens to the price of eggs and peanut butter?

Speaking of Dish, I recently found one of my posts from a few years ago...a time when Dish had something like 7-8 simultaneous disputes, including HBO. HBO is basically "put it on the highest tier and we don't care how few people subscribe."

Also...people can read all these posts, but somehow they become illiterate when it comes to the ACE disclaimer. Odd.

@Sassy22 , Dish does not currently have Nexstar channels either (see https://about.dish.com/2023-01-06-Nexstar-Operated-Mission-Broadcasting-and-White-Knight-Broadcasting-Pull-Local-Channels-from-DISH-TV-Customers) , DIRECTV is included in the dispute that's affecting U-verse TV, so getting a dish is no solution to this.
