Vizio sound bar and Uverse remote fix

I may be the only person with the ONLY solution. I will not post all the directions, figure that out yourself, but here is how to make it work.

1- program Vizio sound bar to TV button on remote using code 1009, try others if that one doesn't work
2- program your tv to the DVD button on remote using manual code or auto scan
3- send all volume to tv button, press ATT then press OK, then enter 955, then press TV button, done.
4- to power all off, press ATT and OK buttons, release, enter 977, press ATT only again, then press DVD and TV buttons, then the ENTER button

This is the fix.

Anytime you hit volume the sound bar will operate, then when you hit power, all should power off and on.

ATT should pay me for this info.

press TV key

Press aux or DVD three flashes for success

Try your TV codes on this key tpo control sound bar

Everything in the Vizio guide tells you to start with a one but the uverse guide says you can only do that with a TV.  The 4060 from HTI didn't work either.  Any other id's?

The idea sounded great but once I copied the TV control to AUX and tried reprogramming the TV button, none of the Vizio codes for the Uverse remote worked the sound bar. I'm going to check with Vizio and the Uverse remote manufacurer Cisco.

Anyone happen to stuble across a code that works? It'd be nice to use one remote than to continue using the remote that came with the soundbar.

You could also put the Sound Bar on the DVD button and program the remote to send volume controls using the DVR command set.  That way your TV button would set you up to control your TV for buttons like TV/VIDEO and MENU instead of having to use the DVR button, and everything else would still work.  Right?

These codes do not work with the Vizio S4251w.

Hadrian98 - Can you find a code that turns the Vizio soundbar on/off while you are searching for the code? That is what alerts you that you have found a correct code. To actually make it work, you need a couple more steps.

You need to program code 955 to change the default from ALWAYS controlling the TV to another option.

You need to add the Vizio to the power control list ( att/ok - 977 - list all your modes - enter).

Some sound bars can be programmed to accept other IR to control them. That is, apply the TV volume IR to the Vizio to make it seamless.

If you cannot get  a compatiblity - You can program the u-verse remote to follow the mode selection, instead of always controling the TV (att/ok - 955 - enter). Then, while in att mode (i.e. normal watching the volume button will control the STB).

Set the STB volume down to 15.

Set the TV volume to a comfortable level.

Set the Vizio volume to a comfortable level.

While watching, in att mode, the volume control will vary what you hear from either the TV or the VIzio. Whichever audio is on.

Here are some other remotes that support your setup -

They do on my 4251, and no assigning to aux or DVD button does not work. No the sound bar will not power off, but I don't care, it works for audio and that is all I care about, otherwise I would program my worthless Harmony remote for this setup

Mine is a 4251
Let me repeat, no other buttons work, only tv
No the soundbar will not power off, but it don't care about that
This has to be done in a certain order or will not work
Clear and reset
I only watch uverse and the soundbar so no other features are needed
I have a junky Harmony remote and this works better
Good luck

Like I said but nobody is listening, that will not work as the soundbar only functions on the Vizio tv codes!

OK, you are saying that some Vizio sound bars work with IR intended for TVs.

The problem is a "standard" U-verse remote edits the codes & only allows TV codes on the one TV button. The AUX & DVD buttons edit for different ranges of codes.

To apply TV codes to AUX or DVD button - first change the button to be another TV button as follows - att/OK (together) - 944 - TV - (AUX or DVD). The AUX or DVD button will now accept TV codes instead of AUX or DVD.

I do not know how this affects 955 for always assigning volume control or 977 for power all devices (is it TV or AUX/DVD & can you do it). Worst case is have it follow the mode button, which may be best anyway.

I once had three TVs on one remote using the follow the mode for both volume and power.

The problem with this "solution" is it's hardly a solution for most people. If all you have is a TV with uverse and a soundbar, it works fine. If, like many people probably have, you also have a DVD player hooked up to the TV that happens to be the same brand as the TV (in my case, Samsung) this solution solves nothing.

trav323 - Please be more specific about what you want to do & why this does not solve your problem.

If you have a Vizio sound bar that must be programmed as a TV, you do that to the AUX button as described.  And, you have the DVD programmed to the DVD button.

When watching u-verse you have complete control of the the U-verse box & audio volume while in the ATT mode.

While watching a DVD, apply the DVD mode to control play & either the TV or AUX to vary sound.

Yes, the volume button does not work in the DVD mode. But, you have to choose between TV & Sound Bar.

If you had a remote that has activities, you would set one activity for TV sound & another for Soundbar sound. You would choose which device the volume button applies to at power up by whhich activity you activate.

With the U-verse remote the choice is made when it is time to change the volume, you push the mode button to assign the device to the volume button (or the volume button to the device).

The above posts have some good information but there are some errors.  I have had success with the following procedure on the U-Verse S10-S3 and S10-S4 remotes and a Visio S3821 Sound Bar, this should work for other similar situations:

1. Program the TV button to control the volume on your sound bar.  Pick the TV model that matches your sound bar brand.  My Visio worked with the Visio TV code 1009.  Press hold TV/OK - press 1009.  Check volume, it works!

2.  Now assign this TV configuration to your AUX button.  Press hold AT&T/OK - 944 - TV - AUX.

3.  Note the 944 procedure does not "enable" the AUX or DVD button to accept TV codes.  It assigns the current TV code to that button.

4.  Now program the TV button to control your TV.  Mine is a Samsung.

5.  Now set the remote to Send Volume to Mode Selected.  AT&T/OK - 955 - Enter

6.  I can now adust the volume with the AT&T box and the Sound Bar independently.

How mine works:

1. Everything is off.

2. Press AT&T button to turn on AT&T box and the TV.

3. Press the AUX button. Press volume up or down to turn on sound bar.  No, the power button will not turn on this particular sound bar as it is designed to work with Visio TV's and that would not work well.

4.  Press AT&T to change box volume.  Press AUX to change sound bar volume.  Note. The volume on my Samsung TV is disabled when a sound bar is connected.

Enjoy!
