Updating U-verse TV

I know AT&T is trying to focus on Directv, but show some love to U-verse TV.  on AT&T updating U-verse TV. I mean update the boxes or software.

Not going to happen.  Uverse TV is no longer being offered so there is no motivation to update anything.

Agreed. Unless there's some sort of major security risk, the Windows CE that the boxes run on won't be updated.

Call AT&T and tell them you would like to keep Uverse TV and upgrade your internet to fiber. They will do it. They are also signing up new Uverse TV customers but you have to call in to do it. No new Uverse TV through the online signups.

@skeeterintexas I've heard rumors that it's technically still possible but a new customer for u-verse would basically only be signed up by a super high level employee, and only for a customer who was returning who removed uverse tv by mistake or for some odd reason couldn't access direct tv satelliate or directv stream at all.  I could not imagine the amount of hours(day? / weeks?) a customer would have to spend on the phone to accomplish it (finding both an employee willing to do and an employee with the technical knowledge of atts new customer setup system and then actually getting it installed if it hadn't been wired already, lol), but sure technically it's possible over the phone lol.

@baseballisback given that the boxes run on windows CE 5.0.1400 which was released circa 2004 and windows CE 8.0 was the final version released in 2013, I'd be pretty confident it does have major security flaws and they will never be patched lol.  luckily I doubt any hacker would bother with such a small # of devices.  LMAO interestingly just learned according to wikipedia extended support ended in 2014 for CE 5.0, so it hasn't had a security update in 9+years.  lol and even the final CE version is due to end support in October 2023.

meanwhile the middleware is Mediaroom software(originally made by microsoft, then ericsson, then "mediakind) which att never bothered to pay for any upgrades past version 2.6.  Eventually mediaroom software switched to being androidtv based.  It is interesting that they still list AT&T as a customer on their website lol.  The worst part is even though the boxes and software actually have powerful capabilities at&t always locked them down so they couldn't be accessed (years ago at&t made a mistake and unlocked them and for a few months all my tvs even an ancient CRT became full WIDI capable receivers that I could mirror laptop to, it actually worked surprisingly well). They also once unlocked a feature that allowed resolution to be switched to 1080p(not just 1080i) on one of my motorola stbs, but again quickly eliminated it.

The Wikipedia page says that someone tried to order U-Verse but was sent a DTV Stream box.

Maaaaaaybe it's possible for a returning customer to get it via the Office of the President, but I doubt that.

@baseballisback I mean given the average att customer's knowledge of the names of att products and the general ineptitude of phone service at att i'd imagine it's likely lots of customers would get sent directv stream boxes when they didn't want it.  Especially when they were contract only and att pushed reps to sell them at any cost or lie.

hahahah I can't believe that would be on a wikipedia page.

I completely understand your frustration with the lack of updates to U-verse TV, even as AT&T seems to be focusing more on Directv. As a U-verse TV customer myself, I have also been hoping for some improvements to the service. While it's true that AT&T has been putting more resources into Directv, that doesn't mean they have completely abandoned U-verse TV. In fact, U-verse TV is still available in many markets and remains a popular choice for customers who prefer a more traditional cable TV experience.
