Download U-verse app from Google Play to cell phone is failing

I have installed the U-verse app, downloaded from Google Play, on my Samsung cell phone.  I will state, up front, that my cell service provider is not AT&T.

I will also state that the service provider for the cell phone has nothing to do with the problem.

When I connect to Google Play, and it tells me I have 4 apps that can be updated, and 3 of the 4 successfully update, and the 4th does not, I have to believe the problem is with that file on the server, or with the server itself.

The update procedes to 40% (13.24MB of 32.63MB), stops downloading and tries to install.  This fails with the message "Package file is invalid."  The reason, I think, is obvious.  Only part of the file downloaded, so there is no proper 'end' to it.

I have tried multiple times, in case it was a network issue.  I have freed internal storage space by moving apps to the SD card and deleting several I no longer need.  Free space went from just over 100 MB to over 400 MB.  The download still fails, and it fails in the exact same place, every time.

I also tried to download once over 3G, which was very slow.  It also failed, at the exact same 40% complete, and tried to install.  This clearly eliminates network issues as a possible cause of the problem.

I assert that this is not a problem with my cell phone and does not belong with my cell service.  It is not a network issue and does not belong with my network service provider, who happens to be AT&T.

This is a problem with the file itself or the disk storage holding it, on the server used by Google Play.

I do not have any relationship with Google for Google Play, to be able to contact them to fix this.  My only course of action is through AT&T support.

Which, to echo some other posts I've seen, has been abysmal.  The prime assumption support seems to make is that the problem is at my end of the connections.  Which implies everything else is working fine and does not need to be analyzed.  This is the wrong way to go about support.

I used to work in support, as a second level engineer.  I don't see this sort of multi-level support being available through AT&T.  Perhaps it should be added.

Hi @ramjr2014,

I apologize about the issues you are having trying to update the U-verse app. I have just uninstalled the app and reinstalled it on my Samsung Cell phone with no issues. If possible, try to uninstall the app completely and reinstall it once again. Let us know how it goes.

OK, I gave that a shot and it didn't work, though it changed where the failure happens.  I now get 90% (29.40 MB) before it stops, tries to install and then fails with the same error.

I have gone through all the apps I have and moved everything that can be moved to the SD card.  According to Settings->Applications->Manage applications, I now have 482 MB of free space on the internal storage.

I could perhaps remove one or two more, but 482 seems like way more than should be needed for a download of this file.

And now, of course, I don't have any version of U-verse available on my phone.

Hi,

I was researching the issue further, and there have been reports from others having the issues with apps in general. One thing worth trying is to unmount your SD card and try again. You can do so by accessing your storage settings in your phone.

Another thing to try is to clear the Market's Cache Data. To do so go to Applications > Manage Applications > All > Market and hit "Clear Data"

Hope this helps.

I tried the clear cache first, but it did not help (I assume "Google Play Store" is the equivalent to "Market"?). Neither did unmounting the SD card. It is still failing at the 90% downloaded point.

I just tried to initiate the download from the Google Play web page, it failed as before. Any chance I could get the APK file itself and try a manual install from it?

For grins and giggles, can you find some other app on Google Play that's about the same size (or maybe slightly larger) and see if it will download?

@ramjr2014 - I would not be so fast to discount file size and space remaining on your phone.  I have a ZTE Unico (Mustang for AT&T) with 8 Gb, on board.  Last week, I tried to install Plex Media Server, which was 12 Mb.  I had 250 Mb free but it kept saying that it was too full.  My guess is that many apps have some magical "overhead" size that is provisioned, ahead of time.

So, although the app may only be 30 Mb, it may be expecting 5-10 times that be free, for future use?  Just my guess.

OK. And it installed without any issues. In fact what I did was download a two file package, the "Star Wars: Galactic Defense" game. Total size was 108 MB, the game app itself was 33.14, just a tad larger than the 33 MB shown for the AT&T Uverse app. Both parts downloaded with any issues and it started up OK.

@dhascall - Any suggestions on how to find out if you conjecture is correct?

@ramjr2014 - I have no idea on how to prove it but I'm 100% sure that the app must be looking for additional free space, for future use, based upon my experience with Plex Media Server.  It is a bit like if you use a debit or credit card at a Restuarant or a hotel.  The merchant always requests more than the bill to cover a possible tip or extra room charges.

Since your issue seems solved, please mark your response that stated that all is good (or any others) as an accepted solution, so others can look at what you did.  Thanks.  Welcome! Don't be a stranger on the forums.
