Android Streaming Box not playing hbomax

I have two android streaming boxes. I can install hbomax app on both boxes and log into my AT&T provider account. I can select titles to stream but that is all. They just won't play. I can even advance the video to different time but all I can get is a static picture. The android boxes pretty much can play everything else "I can throw at them". Amazon Prime, Netflix, Youtube, Peacock, Plex..... Any suggestion is welcomed.

Aminah, are you saying that his Android 8.1 box doesn't fit the definition:

  • Android TV with Android OS 5 or later

as given on https://help.hbomax.com/us/Answer/Detail/000001243

(I'm thinking, yes, that's true, because I think Google certifies Android TV boxes and I doubt either of these boxes is a certified Android TV box.  For more information:

Come to think of the problem, the android boxes cannot stream from Xfinity Streaming app also. The reason being Comcast ban video output to HDMI. Is this a similar situation here also?

When you say "ban video output to HDMI..." you made me think of this question:

Is your HDMI cable going directly to a TV, or is it going through a receiver, switch, or something like that?  Perhaps there is an HDCP handshake issue going on?

May be a better word than "ban" is "block".

Here is the connection :

Wifi  ->  Android Box --HDMI Cable ---> TV

For the Xfinity streaming app, the block is in the programing of the apk itself.

If this is what is happening on hbomax, I think it is unfair android box users. Because as I understand, you can stream to TV using Roku boxes  and Firesticks, why not Android box?

I think I understand what you're saying, the Xfinity app isn't intended for Android TV and it won't work on HDMI out.  This is true with the DIRECTV and U-verse Apps.

AFAIK, there are no such restrictions on the HBO Max app.

Hey @Shane100, we understand that you're having trouble with video playback using HBO Max on Android Box. Don't wory, were her to help.

  • What version of the app or you running on your device and is it the correct HBO Max for android devices?
  • Have you tried reinstalling the app?
  • We would suggest that you reinstall the app then try rebooting the device and also reboot your gateway as well.

Please let us know what happens.

I updated to the latest version, 50.35.0.280. I have AT&T internet. I rebooted the gateway and my modem. Here is what happened:

1) Android box A95X Max, Android version 8.1.0. HBOMax apk from Google Play. Signed in with AT&T as provider. Select videos to play. Audio played but video did not move. This process was repeated several times with the same result.

2) Android box H96+, Android version 6.01. Google play usually does not work and I downloaded HBOMax from APKPURE and installed by side loading. That is how I install most apk's on this box. I tried to sign in through provider. Browser just buffer without loading the provider list. Log in with user name and password of existing HBO account was Okay. Audio would play but video did not move just like the other box.

@Shane100

It appears that the device you're using is not supported for steaming HBO Max.

You can see the list of supported devices in the article about Which devices work with HBO Max.

Keep in mind that since the Android app was designed for use with a phone, it may not work with an HDMI display.

Let us know if you need help with anything else.

Thank you for pointing out the Google certification, how disappointing. First time running into this kind of issue among all the streaming services I tried
