TV turns on by itself.

Is it normal (or paranormal?) for two of my TV's to turn on by themselves? (I'm trying to pretend I'm not scared when I go in to turn them off.) They're not set by the TV remote controls to turn on at any time nor do the remotes even have the option of turning them on at a designated time. The TV in my son's room turned on by itself on 8/12/19 and again tonight on 9/12/19 and he's been out of town since 8/12/19. He turned his TV off before he left. The TV in the living room turned on by itself on 8/28/19. I don't even use that TV. Does anyone know what would be causing this unusual occurrence?

There's another way a TV can turn on, but it's not "by itself".  There's a setting on your TV that says something like HDMI Control, turn it off.  What is happening is some device you have attached to your TV (maybe the DirecTV Genie, maybe something else), is sending a signal to the TV to turn on.  This can happen if that other device did a software update and restarted.

Hi There @LilGirlio,

Thank you for reaching out. We understand that you have a strange situation on your hands.  We can help look at this.

TV sets normally should not turn on by themselves. However there is one way that the  the sets can turn on by themselves and that is by using the alarm feature on the sets. So That maybe the case.

To stop this, unplug the power from outlet

If there is anything that you need, please reach back out.

Thank you, Bob7Comer! Yes, our TV's are attached to a DirecTV Genie2, so that is the perfect explanation for it. Thank you, again!
