Restoring Closed Captioning

I am having problems with my closed captioning (CC) on my Direct TV service.

So far I have:

  • rebooted receiver via unplugging and then restoring power for 30 seconds
  • rebooted receiver via red button
  • removed credit card size item from side of receiver box
  • turned captions and subtitles on and off repeatedly
  • went to accessibility settings and made sure track was set to service 1 (it was)
  • pressed Info on remote
Nothing seems to work.  I do get partial CC, bu t only sporadically.  Help!!!
Very frustrating.

We are here to answer any of your questions about closed captioning, @johnmcmillan1.

Is the closed captioning not showing on all channels, or just one?

Closed Captions are not available on all programs, since the broadcaster provides us closed captioning data for their programming. If the channel is eligible for closed captioning, it should have a CC symbol on the channel guide. If you aren't seeing closed captions on a program that displays the CC symbol, try refreshing your equipment online to re sync your channel authorizations and guide data.

Let us know if this works.

Marc,

Sorry for not getting back to you.  I didn't know how to access the community forum since I am a novice and infrequent user (almost never).  I am not totally sure how to "refresh" my receiver.  I did press the small red button on the side of the receiver and nothing happened.  I took out the card inserted on the side and reinserted it --- nothing happened.  I unplugged the power cord and re-plugged it after 15 to 20 seconds.  It didn't solve the CC problem.

There was a third method which says that it restores the receiver to factory settings (or so it states).  I am a little reluctant to do this only because I am not sure what restoring it to factory settings does.  I don't want to screw this up.

After three hours on two separate chat lines, I convinced them to have a technician come to my house tomorrow morning to hopefully solve my problem.
