Can this unit be switch over to internet for signal when bad weather is happening?

Yes.  You should still be able to view OnDemand/Streaming channels (numbers in 1000's) even when the satellite signal is lost due to bad weather.  Provided, of course, that your internet is working.  And that your HR44 is connected to your home network for internet access.

Not so much "switch" as you have access to On Demand channels as long as it is connected to the internet. Just don't reset/reboot your HR44 otherwise it will have to check for service authorizations from the satellite first before it can do anything. Your saved recordings should still work as well while it still has the service authorizations.

Not sure what you mean but not all channels are available for on demand viewing. Those that are might or might not allow you to stream what is currently being broadcast.

Only the channels in your subscription package that provide OnDemand (1000's channel numbers) would be available.
