771 Error on Some Channels

We have had DirecTV for over four years with no problems. Now all of a sudden tonight I am getting a 771 error, but  only on certain channels. I have reset the receiver but it did not help. There are no storms in the area. There are no trees or any other obstructions blocking the dish. Any suggestions?

You're missing all of the odd-numbered transponders on the 99º satellite.  This suggests a problem with the dish LNB.  Best to call for a service visit.  It's free if you have DirecTV's Equipment Protection Plan, or ~$50 regardless of what needs fixing.

One thing you can also try ....

Do you know where your DirecTV dish's SWM Power Inserter (power supply) is located?  Try removing its AC power for a couple of minutes, then repowering it.  See if that helps.

Most likely your dish moved slightly out of alignment.  Or you have a defective/corroded coax cable connector somewhere.  What model DVR/Receiver do you have?   If you have multiple DVR/Receivers, do they all have this problem?

Please post back with your signal readings for each satellite's transponders (and both tuners if applicable). You'll find these readings under "Menu" -> "Setup" -> "System Setup" -> Satellite -> "View Signal Strength". Note the "+" and "-" symbols next to the "Satellite" and "Tuner" entries where you can toggle the readings between the various satellites and both DVR tuners.

Fill in your readings for each satellite and tuner using these examples. A properly aligned dish will show 80-90s on most of the relevant transponders (although some will be low or zero):

I have an HR44 and three Genie Minis C41. The same channels are missing on each one. The signal numbers are below. There are 5 tuners. Do you need these numbers for all of them?

For what it's worth, I don't see anyway the dish could have moved. There is nothing up by it.

All fixed. The tech realigned the dish and also replaced the eyeballs.

Just FYI. The "eyeballs" is the dish LNB that litzdog suggested was faulty. Great remote diagnosis, litz..

I didn't know if the LNB meant just the eyeballs or the entire arm, so I wanted to be clear what the tech told me he did. Thanks for all the help.

771 on some channels.  Replaced LNB about 4 yrs ago since there was water in it.  I do have several large trees in my yard that could be blocking signal.  Not sure it's trees, LNB and/or alignment.  My readings are below and obviously some are below 80's-90's:

1-8:  82 69 79 0 74 92 69 91

9-16: 73 73 72 96 67 94 72 94

17-24: 77 0 74 97 70 93 72 92

25-32: 75 0 81 0 76 92 69 95

Thoughts on what to do next?

Yes, your signals are far too low. If you have HD, the signals from the HD satellites will be even lower. Call DirecTV and get a tech out to check/realign your dish. Free if you have the protection plan, $50 otherwise.

It's almost certainly not your LNB.

@sp003bm, I assume those are your 101º readings?   Those are marginally low.  What about the other satellite readings?  Or is this a standard definition dish setup?

For some reason my earlier reply did not post.

If you have an HD setup, your 99/103 signals should be VERY low with those 101 readings. A correctly aligned dish will have most 101 signals in the high 90s or even 100.
