U Verse DVR with Red X
Originally my TV with the DVR (IPH8010) connected to it was displaying a red x with an 8 below it. I checked the forums and unplugged the power cord from the DVR for 10 seconds and then plugged it back in. After plugging it back in 3 dots appeared and then No Signal was displayed. I unplugged the power cord from the DVR for 10 seconds and plugged it back in two more times as directed. After the 3rd restart the gear came up and once the bar below completed the red x with the 8 returned.
Then I unplugged the DVR for 10 seconds and plugged it back in. I held the power, ok and down button in. The gear came up and the bar completed. Then two gears came up and the bars completed and a red X with 5 was displayed.
I swapped out the DVR with another U Verse box (ISB7005) and the everything worked properly. Then I attempted to swap back to the DVR the gear came up with the bar and when the bar completed the gear stayed on the screen.

The ISB7005 is a wireless receiver (although you can run it wired). It is not a dvr and thus cannot be used as a replacement for the one dvr you have (the IPH8010 in your case) -- there can be only one. The dvr is always the box wired to the gateway.
Reconnect your dvr as you originally had it (i.e., wired to the gateway) and try the troubleshooting steps described here. If the non-disaster recovery doesn't clear things up and you end up having to do disaster recovery that will lose all your recordings but not your scheduling. It's a last resort. After that you need to call tech support (800-288-2020) for a replacement dvr.
