Have Red X with a 5.

My Uverse was showing a red X this morning.  I did the power off for 2 mins, then powered it back on.  Had the gear.  Left it alone and it was working after work.  Was out all evening. Came home and saw the red and green LEDs blinking and a red X on the TV.  Did the power cycle again.  This time I had the gear for a bit, then a red X with a 5 below it.  Believe it's some kind of hardware failure.

I suppose that’s possible.  However I’d check the connection back to the gateway carefully to make sure it’s solid.  If using a surge protector it could be damaged.  Check this link for more suggestions, and I’ll further add that use of battery backup is helpful.
If the box is the DVR and is replaced by att, you will lose all recordings.

Let us help you get your TV back up and running, Tamagrouchy!

As our ace suggested, you'll want to make sure that your gateway's connection is secure. Try rebooting your gateway, then see if the red X comes back. You'll also need to have your gateway plugged directly into an outlet, and not a surge protector.

If all else fails, use the Troubleshoot & Resolve Tool to run diagnostics on your equipment and determine what's causing the red X to appear.

Let us know how it went!

I ran the diagnostic tool.  Ended up calling AT&T, the person there ran the same diags, attempted a reset (didn't work) then had me reset the home gateway (also didn't work). It was determined my receiver was in fact offline and a replacement is being shipped.
