What should I do when my Uverse promotion expires?

Hi,

This is the time of year that I always stress out and dread.....calling all Cable/Satellite companies negotiating my yearly bill.  It's always a big hassle.

My Uverse TV/Internet bundle deal is expiring in 20 days. I've been happy for one whole year with no issues and it's been a dream. My monthly bill was good too.

What is the best way to negotiate with ATT Uverse to keep my bill very near to what it is currently without threatening to leave and fighting, etc.? I just want the bottom price without having to get stressed. Usually I deal with retentions and call many times asking for managers, etc. before I get someone that will give me a decent deal. Is that my best bet again?

Do I just call 1-800-288-2020 and ask for billing and they transfer me to retentions and then I fight it out?

I want to know what type of a price hike I'm talking about before I start calling around other companies. Is it possible to get that bottom line price with one phone call and without threatening to leave or stressing out? lol

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience or any suggestions of the best way to do this. Thought I'd get a head start before starting to make calls next week.

They were extremely awful to me too. Rude, condensending, and very pushy to get me to "upgrade" and pay more which was 100% opposite for the purpose of my call to them. I honestly have never dealt with such a terrible customer service team that treated me so poorly when I was nothing but respectful and nice the entire conversation because that goes further than rude behavior!

One important thing to look at when checking prices is all cable companies do not offer the same services.  For example I only watch the premium channels.  I have all the premium channels.

Start with Epix.  Charter only offers Epix East.  Att offers Epix East and West Epix 2 Epix drivein and Epix 3.

The difference with the other premiums is in the on demand. Charter does not offer all of the on demand but enough that I could live with.

Internet AT&T is rolling out gigabits in some areas.  Charter internet caps at 60 mgs  I have att 45 which is often 50-55.  not much difference there except cable bandwith is shared so you may end up with less speed at various times.

These are minor differences but I could find more.  So just be sure the service you switch to offers what you are looking for.  I have friends that have Charter and Comcast and are always compaining about outages.  Sorry to make this post so long but make a list of what you are looking for and see which service you can live with for at least a year.

AT&T cares absolutely nothing about customer retention.  I called twice today in order to resolve the dreaded price increase for uverse U300 and Internet 45M which had a 1yr price of 118.00 a month - good deal right?  Now fast forward to the new best price for U300 @ 189.00 + tax and 45M @ $77.00 + 7.00 equipment rental.  Ironic that no one can seem to offer a better deal.  So I have issued a disconnect order and will look to my local cable company that will offer triple play services (no contract) similar channel packages + 100M internet for 119.99 + tax.

Thanks AT&T for saving me money!

Sounds like we had the same or similar package and pricing once the promo ends. I ended up (after about a month and half of calls and escalations) getting my package price fixed and back in line with the promo I was receiving before the price went up. It was a pain in the butt but if you remain persistant something might come of it. Keep asking for Tier 2 or manager's support when calling. First level of customer support will never get you anything - they are all kept to a script on what they can say. I still plan on cancelling once this promo ends after a year this time since I'm very unhappy with the picture quality of Uverse and unreliable internet speeds.

When you call say "cancel service" and this should bring you to retention. If it doesn't work insist on speaking to retention.DO NOT CALL REGULAR CUSTOMER SERVICE! These people are script readers and they will not help you. It helps to have your local competitors pricing available when you call.

I was lucky when I called when my promotion was expiring. I asked the "retention specialist" what could he offer me to keep me as a customer. I am a long time ATT customer, home phone 1973, wireless 1991 and UV 2010. He asked me what I wanted. I told him something comparable to my expiring promo. He was able to give me a promo that was $5.00 more than the expiring promo. If you are told nothing is available hang up and call again. Two years ago I had to call five times before getting someone willing to help.

Remember when you call it is not what you say but how you say it.  Good Luck!

I have the same problem.  I called to see about a new promotion.  I was told the only promotion I can get is to switch to Direct TV.  I said I do not want direct TV and even told them that Charter was offering a promotion 110.00 less then I am paying.  They said then go with Charter.  Even after the promotion Charter regular fee is about 40.00 less then Uverse.  I told them if they would even come close to the 40.00 I would consider staying another year and they refused.  I then said I want to reduce my service and they told me if I change my service my bill will go up.  I then sent a message to customer care and they will not even return my call.  I will try one last time sending a message to customer care and if I still do not get a response then I will change service and once I change I will not be back.  I see other people getting an offer to stay with Uverse and I would like to know how they do it.  I have only been able to get a offer for Direct TV

Hi dinglesby,

Did you try calling again as I mentioned in my earlier post? Sometimes this is what it takes.

On my last call the rep didn't mention anything about DTV.

Charter, now Spectrum, just bought Brighthouse (my only other cable provider) in my area. They have bundle pricing starting as low as $29.99 guaranteed for 12 months. A package comparable to my UV will be about $100.00 (includes fees and estimated tax) a month for 12 month, about $100.00 cheaper than UV. Sprectrum will buy out your contract up to $500.00.

Everyone wish me luck. I absolutely hate this time of year. I loathe it. And yes, my blood pressure goes sky high when ATT Unverse people have no sympathy or want to help me keep my bill near where it was.

They want to think they are doing me a great favor by giving me 5.00 promo for the next year and want to sign me up right away. Or they say well let's see what you are using now and let's see what we can take away to get you close to what you are paying now. Or for each time I call to try to get someone to help, they each want to know what TV shows I like, what I do on the internet, etc. I feel like an old record that keep repeating. Perhaps I should record my voice and just hit 'play' when I get asked the same questions over and over. Ohhhhhh golly gee, please wish me luck or please share any tricks y'all have found to make this less painful.

I know they couldn't care less if you threaten to leave.  My brother just dealt with TW. Then tried to increase his bill by 40.00 and no way was he paying that so he cut the cable TV cord. I said 'Good for you'!!!! I wouldn't pay that either.

I will be tempted to cut the TV out also if ATT doesn't help me out. I wish we could be put on a good 2 year promo and then we wouldn't have to deal with this issue every year.

Why can't ATT see that we are valued customers that pay on time, etc. and say, wow, you're such a good customer so let me help you out anyway I can that makes you happy and to keep you a satisfied customer? Is that asking for too much? lol

This is a good 1 week of full time work.....going in...here I go. 😞

They won't allow me to call in about being put on a new promotion until after this one completely expires. Darn, I was all hyped up for calling many times for many days and now I have to wait about 5 more weeks. Dang it. It would have been nice to go ahead and take care of it in advance before it all of a suddent expires but oh well.

Wow, that's a huge jump in price.

Are any of you being pushed by AT&T to to with DirectTV to save money? They did ask me that, but I refuse. I don't want a dish in my yard on on my roof.

Thanks for the heads up on who to ask for.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experience. Yep, it's a pain and very stressful experience to have to call and call and call and call to try to find someone who will help.

I tried calling the other day, but they won't help until my current promo expires. I truly wish we could lock in for 2 years and only deal with this stressful time once every 2 years.

My brother ended up cutting his cable TV in the last month. He got tired of dealing with his cable company and upping his bill. He said it was crazy to pay that for TV when so many other options out there these days. Right now I'm looking at other options myself. Never knew they have DVR services out there that aren't tied to cable companies.

I called this morning to speak with customer retention and was truthful about not being able to afford my new balance after my promotion ended 6 months ago. I got no push back and she gave me the promotion again for a whole year with no contract. I know some people say threaten to cancel, I didn't threaten anything, I was however truthful about how I could not afford it and I would hate to cancel because I have had no problems thus far with the service they have provided me. Good luck!

You are so so so so so lucky. Do you even realize how lucky you are?  How did you get so lucky?  I just received an email that my bill is ready. I checked it out after taking some deep breaths. I knew it was time for my bill to go up. Yep, sure enough it went up about 50.00. I tried to call AT&T earlier to be on new promo but they said I had to wait until today. After I run some errands, I plan to call it a day because I know I'll be fighting with AT&T for the rest of the day trying to get my bill back to where it was or at least close to it. I always hate this time of the year.....so stressful. I'm so glad you had a easy time of it. You were born under a lucky star. 🙂
