Zoom and Stretch Functions Not Available on AT&T TV Now?

The Spanish language channels on AT&T TV Now are all messed up as to aspect ratios.  The HD channels are fine, but most channels are still in SD.  The problem is that the original programming is usually 16x9 HD but is squished into a 4x3 SD image with vertical black bars.  And some channels are incorrectly stretched out with horizontal black bars.

DirecTV compensates for this by offering zoom, sretch, and crop functions.  Why does AT&T TV Now not have these options?  Sling TV has a zoom option.

These channels are unwatchable on AT&T TV Now as they are presented now.

Good morning @Train,

Thank you for reaching out, let's take a further look into this together.

Please share the networks and devices this is occurring on. Then if possible, provide a screenshot of how the video looks and any troubleshooting steps you've performed.

Above are some of the channels with improper aspect ratios on AT&T TV Now:

FoxLife:  Improperly squished to a 4x3 image

TeleCentro:  Improperly squished to a 4x3 image

Sur Peru:  Improperly stretched out to a partial 16x9 image (instead of zoomed to completely fill 16x9 screen)

TV Chile:  Improperly stretched out to a partial 16x9 image (instead of zoomed to completely fill 16x9 screen)

I am using a Roku Ultra (2019) version.  I have tried all possible options in Roku and AT&T TV Now.  Nothing will correct the improper aspect ratios for these channels.  Please fix them in the AT&T TV Now app for Roku.  Or, better yet, add an option to zoom, stretch, and crop images like you have with DirecTV.

Here are some more channels with aspect ratio problems on AT&T TV Now:

TV Chile on Windows, using Chrome Browser:  Improperly reduced 16x9 image down to a 4x3 image

Nat Geo Mundo, using Roku Ultra:  Improperly stretched out to a partial 16x9 image (instead of zoomed to completely fill 16x9 screen)

CNN en Espanol, using Roku Ultra:  Improperly stretched out to a partial 16x9 image (instead of zoomed to completely fill 16x9 screen)

The last photo shows an example of a correct 16x9 SD image on AT&T TV Now:

TV Espanola (TVE), using Roku Ultra:  Properly zoomed/stretched to completely fill 16x9 screen

The aspect ratio problems using AT&T TV Now are usually the same on both my Roku Ultra and on Windows, using the Chrome browser.  TV Chile is an exception, where it is improperly stretched on the Roku and improperly reduced to a 4x3 image using Windows.

Please fix the aspect ratio problems with these channels, or give us a functional option to fix them, like DirecTV has.

I would like to add that my television is a Samsung and it is set to 16x9 screen-fit format, which works properly for all other channels using all other services, including SD channels, except for these Spanish language channels on AT&T TV Now.

I am noticing now that Sur Peru has some programs that are properly zoomed/stretched to completely fill the 16x9 screen.  So, the aspect ratio problems with Sur Peru look like they are from the channel itself on only some programs, and are not an AT&T TV Now problem.  So, you can take Sur Peru off of the problem channel list, and I will classify it this way now:

Sur Peru:  Properly zoomed/stretched to completely fill 16x9 screen

Also, FoxLife has some programs that are improperly reduced from a 16x9 image down to a 4x3 image.

The other channels discussed above have the aspect ratio problem on AT&T TV Now.

So, after taking Sur Peru off of the list, this is the list of 5 networks with aspect ratio problems on AT&T TV Now:

1.  FoxLife, using Roku Ultra:  Improperly squished to a 4x3 image (some programs improperly reduced from a 16x9 image down to a 4x3 image)

2.  TeleCentro, using Roku Ultra:  Improperly squished to a 4x3 image

3.  TV Chile, using Roku Ultra:  Improperly stretched out to a partial 16x9 image (instead of zoomed to completely fill 16x9 screen); and on Windows, using Chrome Browser:  Improperly reduced from a 16x9 image down to a 4x3 image

4.  Nat Geo Mundo, using Roku Ultra:  Improperly stretched out to a partial 16x9 image (instead of zoomed to completely fill 16x9 screen)

5.  CNN en Espanol, using Roku Ultra:  Improperly stretched out to a partial 16x9 image (instead of zoomed to completely fill 16x9 screen)

@Train,

Thank you. Does this occur on any other devices such as your phone or a computer? When did you initially run into this video issue? Then, does reinstalling the app or manually logging out and back in correct the screen?

As I indicated, the aspect ratio problem occurs on Roku Ultra and also on a desktop computer with Windows, using the Chrome browser.  The aspect ratio problem is exactly the same on both devices, except for TV Chile, which is stretched improperly on Roku, when it should be zoomed to 16x9, and displayed as a correct aspect ratio but as a reduced image in a 4x3 box in Windows.

We also tried Android TV, and the aspect ratio problem is the same for these channels.

This aspect ratio problem has been going on since Day 1 using AT&T TV Now, which is about 3 months now for us.  Also, we had these same channels on DirecTV satellite with the same issues, but DirecTV satellite receivers have stretch, zoom, and crop options in the settings that can be used to correct the aspect ratio.

We have logged in and out, installed and reinstalled, cleared cookies, etc.  We also installed a Chrome browser extension that stretches video images and works with other providers, such as Sling TV, but it does not work with AT&T TV Now.

This is clearly a problem that AT&T has with these channels the way they come from the providers, because it is the same on all devices in AT&T TV Now and on DirecTV satellite.

AT&T TV Now should correct these channels so that they all appear as 16x9 images that fill the screen.  Or, provide the same stretch, zoom, and crop options in settings that DirecTV satellite receivers have.

Have you checked to see how these channels look on your devices?

Unless AT&T can work with these channel providers to correct the aspect ratio issues, AT&T TV Now should add the same stretch, zoom, and crop options in settings that DirecTV satellite receivers have.

I would like to add that AT&T TV Now charges $15 for these channels in the Spanish language package.  AT&T charges $14.99 for these same channels in the Spanish language package on DirecTV.  AT&T TV Now really should add the same stretch, zoom, and crop options in settings that DirecTV satellite receivers have.

As it stands now regarding the Spanish language channels, AT&T TV Now is an inferior product for the same price (actually $0.01 more expensive) than DirecTV.

We know that AT&T has already developed the stretch, zoom, and crop software options because they are available in the DirecTV satellite receiver's software settings.  They should be added to AT&T TV Now.

Of course, the best solution would be for AT&T to obtain the HD version of these channels from the providers.  It is my understanding that TV Chile and Nat Geo Mundo are available in HD, because I have seen them in HD on other providers, and I do not know why AT&T TV Now does not have TV Chile and Nat Geo Mundo in HD.  But it is my understanding that FoxLife, TeleCentro, and CNN en Espanol are not available to AT&T in HD from the providers.
