camera recording

My system is working. Im troubled as to why my footage comes up incomplete. Example, last night a teen came to my porch and tried to get in. The camera only captured him at the door not coming or going. Do I need to adjust the camera length time or what? I feel like once its capturing something it should continue till the action is out of view
