Getting the Military Discount

My son is active military.  He was home @ Christmas.  We went to ATT to get discount w military ID & pay stub in hand.  They said have to do online.  He is now back on base w no access to his phone.  I have tried for 2 days with long holds and passed over to “DirectTV” with no results.  I now have scanned cc’s of both of the above.  ATT has been awful .  I’m very frustrated and am seriously considering changing his account to another carrier.  Help please!

@Annette32404 Well, that’s why you lost the internet and tv discounts. Unlimited your way means you have one of the current unlimited plans, Unlimited Elite, Unlimited Extra or Unlimited Starter. Unlimited “your way” just lets you mix those plans on the same account. The internet and tv discounts are only with the grandfathered Unlimited & More plans. You must have changed plans sometime. I actually wasn’t sure if changing to a current plan would cause me to lose the internet and tv discount but you have now confirmed it.

@sandblaster it's the same plan I've had for 3 years so I'm not sure what the issue is.

@Annette32404 Are you sure it’s been 3 years? There was no unlimited “your way” 3 years ago. Unlimited your way only started when Unlimited Elite, Extra and Starter were introduced, which I believe was October of 2019.

Hi. Can a military discount be applied to a pre-paid acct?  I'm housebound, usually id.me is what most want for verification on other purchases elsewhere.  i would have to upload the dd214 - I can't leave the house again so must be able to do online. Finally, does the bill have to be in the veteran's name- We want to build my credit so ATT says they appreciate family, but what I've read makes it sound as though even with necessary documents, it still couldn't be in the spouse's name (even if not pre-paid).  Mostly do not want to be locked into a contract in case reception is poor. 2 lines plus a watch, and bring our new phones (unlocked, no phone number). Thank you in advance for your help.

Prepaid doesn’t qualify. And yes  it needs to be in the veterans name. Phone companies don’t build credit. They report if you default on the agreement.

@BevGadget As noted above, there is no military discount for prepaid and the account must be in the name of the person eligible for the discount for postpaid. For active duty, it could be in the spouse’s name since active duty spouses are eligible for the discount. ATT is no contract, so you won’t be locked into any contract. However, if you do a trade in deal for a new phone, you must keep service for 36 months to get all credits for the trade in promotion.

@BevGadget

We want to build my credit

Neither pre or postpaid cell service accounts build a credit history. It's a soft check.  The only thing that's possible is if you default on postpaid service that would be reported and ruin your credit. But there is no positive reporting by cellular service providers. If you want to build credit you have to get a credit card, and make sure you pay it off every month

so ATT says they appreciate family, but what I've read makes it sound as though even with necessary documents, it still couldn't be in the spouse's name (even if not pre-paid).

Not sure what you're asking here?

Mostly do not want to be locked into a contract in case reception is poor. 2 lines plus a watch, and bring our new phones (unlocked, no phone number).

You cannot get cellular service for a watch on prepaid service it's not offered on any of the major carriers prepaid plans.  The only prepaid carrier that offers a watch plan that I know of is visible

IIf you byod you are no contract.  Just be aware service is not prorated when you leave. It is month to month and you pay for the full month.

If you have two phones and a watch, you would want to bring one phone over to test reception.  Depending on your location, prepaid may not be a true measure of postpaid service coverage. There are places in the United States where AT&T prepaid has no coverage but postpays does.
