Spent almost a whole day online and on phone trying to resolve.  Finally I figured out two things that had to be done - in addition to putting in the MMS APN information that one representative gave to me.  I also had to go into Cellular, Internet APN and enter the word "phone" (without the quotes)

This is an answer rather than a question, but I hope it helps someone.  I was unable to figure out how to transfer photos from the ZTE222 to a laptop via USB (if anyone knows how to do this, please answer), but I did get it done via Bluetooth.  It's a multi-step process on my laptop with Windows 7.
