Purchased an unlocked iPhone SE from Apple Store. My iPhone 4S SIM card doesn't fit the SE card.

I recently purchase an Unlocked iPhone SE (64GB model) outirght from the Apple Store. I decided to purchase the unlocked phone directly through Apple since the unlocked version has more flexibility if I decide to ever choose another carrier. Area code required for sending/receiving texts?

I'm on an iphone 4S. I can't send or receive texts without an area code. Is this normal? I don't need to use an area code to make a local phone call, so why with texts? This is going to be a problem for people that don't know they have to use the area code to text me.
