Can I get Call Protect, without losing my grandfathered in cheap plan?

We have a grandfathered in plan rate, that does not include unlimited data (because we don't need it). Would joining up for call protect change my plan & it's rate?  I was told that if I ever change my plan again out of this grandfathered in rate, I will never be able to go back again.
