unlock

I received an unlock code for my phone, with instructions:

1. Power off the device and remove the SIM card.

2. Power on the device.

3. Enter #0111*, the unlock code, and #. The device cycles off and back on.

Here's my questions:

1. I assume what I would enter is #0111*xxxxxxxx#, where "xxxxxxxx" is the unlock code?

2. Taken literally, the instructions imply that there should be a prompt for the information after powering on but I assume you have to dial the number after the phone restarts?

3. So I tried entering the string above in the dialer and since nothing happened immediately, dialed the number. The result was that it said "Emergency calls only" (since I'd taken out the SIM card as requested by the first instruction).

What am I missing?

Don't the directions tell you to insert a non AT&T SIM card?

No. I was guessing that might be the problem, and it makes sense that it would trigger a prompt, but then why would the instructions begin with "Remove the SIM card"? Maybe I need to find a SIM card from another provider to see what happens.

The device unlock instructions can be a bit confusing but no worries, ! We're here to help clarify the instructions for you!

You're on the right track! You're just missing one step. As our ACE mentioned, you must insert a non-AT&T SIM which would be for the service provider you're activating service with. The first step was indicating to remove the AT&T SIM.

If you come back and let us know which device you're unlocking, we can confirm the steps for unlocking your device for you. Otherwise you got this!

Please return and let us know if you were able to get your device unlocked.

Thank you for visiting the AT&T Community!

Well, after all that it turned out that the phone was already unlocked, so I can't verify that the answer was correct but it makes sense. You might want to update the instructions though, to avoid people getting confused in future. Change the first line to "Replace the AT&T SIM card with a SIM card for another service".
