Trying to update carrier unlocked galaxy s4

I took my at&t galaxy phone to best buy to get it flash updated to the latest android version. My s4 is carrier unlocked and I was informed that flashing the update would lock the phone back onto AT&T. Would I be able to unlock it again?

If ATT unlocked the phone, the unlock is permanent.

We give out this advice all the time and no one has ever reported their unlocked phone became carrier locked again.

Perhaps they were referring to bootloader lock, which on android 4 can be rooted, on android 5 it is encrypted and not unlock able.

When I purchased the phone it was originally locked to AT&T. I requested the unlocked code after I switched carriers. So the unlock should remain?

Yes.  That is the sim or carrier unlock.  It is permanent.
