Samsung J727A Update!?

My phone won't update. It's never updated. I just thought since it was a cheap Samsung J727A that AT&T didn't bother pushing updates to it. But after Googling recently, I found out my device should at least be running Android 8.1, not Android 7.0 which is what I have installed and cannot seem to update.!/stepbystep/id/stepbystep_KM1240757?make=Samsung&model=GalaxyJ7

It was bought outright at an AT&T store with an AT&T SIM card. The phone has the same SIM card from day one. I've cleared space on phone, even installed 60GB SD card. Storage shouldn't be an issue. I tried checking updates via WiFi and 4G. I've restarted the phone too.

Yet, the Software update still claims "Current software is up to date."

And over at Settings > About device, it says I'm still running Android 7.0 with security update from Nov 1 2017.

The only thing I haven't tried is a Factory data reset.

We know keeping your software up to date is important @Jazen,

Thank you for the detailed information you provided. Sounds like you've taken a lot of steps to get the software updated. Oftentimes the updates are released incrementally.

When you are having issues with getting a software update we recommend using our Troubleshoot & Resolve tool to help correct the issue.

Please let us know if this helps!

Yes, you should be on 8.1, and on the May 1, 2020 security patch. And probably the last one Samsung will release to that phone (but, you never know - may get one more in a couple of months).

However, at this point, with so much time since the last update, the AT&T system probably doesn't register it anymore as update-able (if that's a word). And, for the last several years, many AT&T phones seemed to have been "lost" so the system doesn't update them. CS just repeates the same "look at our troubleshooting guide" that everyone already looked at but still didn't work.

Find the nearest UbreakIfix store and they can flash the newest update. Just be sure to backup and copy what you want to save because it will wipe the phone in the process.
