Samsung Galaxy S7 Active FM Tuner No Longer Works With Next Radio After Android 8 Update.

Make: Samsung

Model: Galaxy S7 Active (SM-G891A)

Android Version: 8.0.0

NextRadio Vesion: v5.0.2334-release

As the title states, I was previously able to listen to my local FM stations through my phone's built in FM Tuner (not streaming) on Android 7. However post-update, I am unable to get any audio using the included Samsung earbuds (TRRS pinout) and get loud static with my normal headphones (TRS pinout).

I have followed the suggested fix here to no avail (sans factory reset): https://forums.att.com/t5/Samsung-Discussion-Support/Next-radio/m-p/4340284

I have also submitted a bug report to NextRadio themselves, so I was hoping to get a fix here before I submit a bug report to the Android team themselves.

Thanks

Hey @nwinston94,

Thank you for reaching out to us on community forums. We can help!

A post-update app error can be resolved by resetting the system apps cache in the apps settings menu. By clearing the cache and resetting the device, you will force any out-of-date applications to update.

If this does not return app functionality, you may consider looking to see if any debris is stuck in the headphone jack or testing other audio applications to see if it's device or app specific. Damage to the device or damage to the NextRadio app could factor into functionality. Also, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

I have tried those suggested fixes however they aren't responsible. I got in contact with the NextRadio devs and they said that my error is common with Samsung users who recently upgraded to Android 8. They're getting in contact with Samsung to fix the issue as it seems to be a driver issue or something with their app conflicting with Android 8. Here's the instructions he sent me for submitting bug reports so that way they can get the fix made faster:

Hi,

We have received some reports that users are unable to listen to FM in NextRadio after installing the Android Oreo update. This only seems to affect some users, and we have contacted Samsung to try to figure out the issue.

Thanks for your patience, and sorry for the inconvenience!

If you are willing and able here are some additional steps to help us collect information to pinpoint this issue:

  1. Open NextRadio and try to listen to FM with headphones plugged in. (Within 15 minutes of running these following steps)
  2. Dial *#9900#
  3. Select Run Dumpstate/Logcat/Modemlog
  4. Once completed select Copy To SDCARD(INCLUDE CP RAMDUMP)
  5. Select Exit
  6. Connect the phone to a computer and make sure file transfer is allowed
  7. Find the log folder under Computer\GalaxyS*\Phone
  8. Copy the log folder from your phone to your desktop
  9. Right-click and send the copied log folder to a Compressed folder
  10. Go to https://files.fm/
  11. Press Select files from your PC for upload
  12. Browse and select the compressed log folder
  13. Press Start Upload
  14. Copy the link provided in a reply to your ticket
  15. Select 2 days for how long to keep the files and Press Save and send
  16. Send the link to us through the ticket

*#*#4636#*#* temporarily allows nextradio to work on my galaxy s7.  But, I have to use it every time.

You must turn on next radio and select a station before making the call to *#*#4636#*#*
