Hey there @wilgem

I’d be happy to help with this Contacts app crashing issue you’re experiencing! As this is a core app for the operating system, it’s important we resolve this! I would recommend first booting the phone into safe mode to determine if another app is causing the issue.

To boot into safe mode:

  • Power off the device
  • Hold the power button until Samsung Galaxy S5 logo appears, then release
  • With the logo on screen, press and hold the volume down button
  • Keep the volume down button held until “Safe Mode” appears in the bottom left corner

Try opening the contact app and make a call to see if the same issue occurs. To exit out of safe mode, power the device off and back on. Should you find that everything functions correctly in Safe Mode, it may be another app which is causing the performance issues. If issues persist, backup the device and perform a factory reset.

To back up the device, I recommend using Samsung Kies 3 which allows you to backup everything in moments. See here for a step-by-step guide in backing up and restoring your device. Once backed up, you would perform a factory reset by heading to Settings>Backup & Reset>Factory Data Reset then tap Reset Device and Delete All.

After the device has been reset, try performing the same actions that were causing the app to crash before restoring. If the issues continue, it may require a device replacement.

If this helps, please mark this answer as an accepted solution!

Thanks,

Charise

When was the last time you power cycled your phone? Your phone is a mini computer and sometimes needs rebooting to clear its memory and will sometimes correct problems.
