Next radio.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 and I would like to use the next radio app. When is at&t going to unlock the phones so we don't have to use our cell service to listen to the radio?

With very few exceptions, no ATT phones have the hardware for the FM chip enabled.

(The HTC Phones would be the exception I am aware of)

When ATT enables this use they will probably also advertise the phones that have active FM chips.

You ATT GS5 does not have active FM chip.

Agreed that we won't see it in the specs. The wifi chip included in the
phone does have the capability for FM though, so it's not as much a
hardware limitation as samsung/ATT supporting the feature.

Neither of these things is true, both the S5 and the S6 have the FM receivers, they are just turned off. If they are turned on your S5 will get FM radio.

You have to have an antenna and there isn't one in the models that Att sells.

The specs for the S5 and S6 do not include radio.

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s6-6849.php

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s5-6033.php

as opposed to the HTC phones

http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_(m8)-6074.php

And LG

http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_g2-5543.php

Not that it matters because ATT doesn't support FM radio anyway.

If Apple could put FM radio in the iPod nano 5, 6 and 7, there is no reason it couldn't be in cell phones.  The iPod nano requires headphones as an antenna to use the radio.  (Found my 5th gen nano and charged it up, works well. )

Until ATT supports FM radio, we won't be seeing the option included in the specs.

AT&T is pushing to enable FM. Not disable it.

Your S5 does not have the necessary hardware. Samsung dropped FM after the Note 2 and Galaxy S3. If some blog or website says it's there and disabled they are wrong. It's just not there. FM needs an antenna and manufacturers do not see any benefit having something that can impact the functionality of the other radios in the device.

The 64 thousand dollar question is, when will ATT support FM radio use?

I heard it was in the works, like wifi calling on android, but these things take on mythical qualities after half a year.  LOL.

Until they support it, and HTC or LG sells better than Samsung and iPhone, there isn't much incentive to put active chips in the phones.

And to to make it very clear to the OP and other posters, if your phone didn't come with an active FM chip, it still won't get FM radio.  As mentioned the Note 2 had FM chip.  The S3 did too.  none of the Samsung phones since have an Fm radio chip.

No its hardware as Samsung does not add an antenna.
