Do outside purchased 5G capable phones require a 5G plan?

It looks like all the newest phones are 5G capable. It also looks like buying a 5G phone through AT&T will require their customers to move to a 5G plan, usually missing some benefit their current plan has (in my case more data, data rollover and no throttling). I'm curious if its possible to simply buy one of the new 5G capable phones outright elsewhere and skip the forced plan change, especially given that there is no 5G anywhere near us.

You don't have to change plans if you get a phone from att with 5G.

Yes, you can do that. I’m not sure you are forced to change to a 5G plan if you buy from ATT, though. There may be a way around that.

Hello @bum(Edited per community guidelines),

Thank you for your inquiry.

As long as your device is compatible with AT&T's network (LTE, 4G, 5G), you wouldn't need to change your data plan.

The towers in your area will need to provide AT&T coverage in order to use the service.

5G coverage is the highest available.
