Buying phone from ebay. Clean IMEI as of rigth now, how can i prevent the seller to report it afterwards

I want to avoid problems in the future. How can I make sure the seller doesn't report the phone as lost or stolen later on?The phone still has warranty and is in his ATT account

nope thats the risk you take buying used from a 3rd party, people will sell a phone and wait until ebays return policy is passed and then they will report then lost or stolen

I’m pretty sure that’s not true. Once the phone is no longer associated with the account, the account owner can no longer report that device. The problem is verifying a phone is no longer associated with the seller’s account. I wouldn’t take the seller’s word that it’s been removed.

This is what I thought.
In order for ATT to give me the unlock code, it must not be associated with any active account.
If ATT allows me to unlock it, I would assume that it has already been removed from the seller's account.
this is good news

@Constructive That phone stays associated with your account until you either remove it or it gets associated with some other account.

@hulux That would not be a good assumption. The phone could easily no longer be active on an account allowing it to be unlocked but could still be associated with that account as far as reporting it stolen is concerned.
