5GE/5G/5G+ network not permitted for unlocked phones

I get excited about the new Samsung S20 Ultra. I go purchase it unlocked because I travel internationally only to learn that unlocked phones are not permitted access to the 5G network...YET... I've been a long time customer of AT&T and pay the same bill as everyone else. Why the second class treatment?

It's not acceptable that I buy a phone advertised to access 5G networks, but because its not an 'AT&T locked phone' I have to wait to access the same network everyone else does. Buying an unlocked phone is not a circumvention of the network. I'll tell you what though... If someone else is going to offer me a 5G network (like Verizon), then maybe I should consider a switch...

I was told be a senior rep that there are settings the network team can change for other carriers devices to fully work on the ATT5G network.

Yeah and they are full of it...  Just a FYI...

That phone was made for Verizon and MMwave won't work on ATT with that phone.  They maybe could get low band n5 to work maybe.  The phone is not compliant for VoLTE on ATT so I am trying to figure how they think they will get it working.  ATT made that list @lizdance40 posted for a reason.

Let's look into that for you, @mstegman90!

It would be great if there were settings which the network team could change for non-stock devices to fully operate on another carrier's 5g network. However, there is no way of programming a device to work entirely on another wireless network.

In fact, non-stock devices may experience different levels of coverage and data speed, depending on the device's supported frequency bands.

We hope this info helps!

Motorola edge+ 5g phone xt2061-1 wont work with att. It only recognizes the phone as a 3g. I just bought this phone a year ago through Verizon and changed service because Verizon was too expensive. Now I fond out I cant even use the phone and have to buy another one...i really like the phone so is there any way to change the imie number?

The IMEI identifies the phone so that AT&T knows what model it is.  Your PHONE isn't certified to work, the IMEI is just how AT&T knows that.  Changing the IMEI won't change the phone's software.

I just got off the phone with Motorola and the imei number that's on my phone is an edge+ on their system so ATTs system isn't reading it right.

Maybe Motorola hasn't submitted their certification to AT&T yet. It's Motorola's responsibility to validate their phones to work on AT&T's post-3G network.

@Thorn1001

If you have a Verizon branded Motorola phone it is not going to work on AT& T

You can check the IMEI

https://www.att.com/buy/byod/identify?devicetype=phone

And at&t's list

Factory unlocked phones that will work on AT&T

(you model is not listed)

As far as I can tell there is no mistake. Your phone will not work on AT&T. You can try one of Verizon's many mvnos, they have purchased both Straight Talk and Net10. Or try T-Mobile.

It is now at the end on January 2023 and while T-Mobile and Verizon support 5G service for the unlocked phone I am considering, AT&T still only supports 4G. Is this an issue with their network, or are they punishing people for not buying a phone from them?

I am not buying an unlocked phone just to avoid buying one from AT&T that's locked to their network. I have been with AT&T's cellular network under one name or another since 1989, and unless they never support 5G service on 5G capable phones, I don't see us switching. I am buying an unlocked phone that fits MY needs, not what AT&T, (and all the other carriers), are telling people to buy by only offering select phones from a select few companies. For one, I refuse to pay $5-10 a month more for a phone just to get more internal storage. I can buy a memory card with whatever amount of storage I want one time, and then move that card to my next phone like I have been doing since the mid 2000's. I don't want to pay extra for each 125Gb more storage I need for every phone that I purchase. That's just insane and a waste of money.

@Autotech1  Don't quite understand what you are saying. I have an unlocked phone that supports 5G on AT&T's network, but 5G is not very reliable where we live so I just use LTE all of the time and it works just fine. In other areas, I can switch to 5G without issues.
