5GE/5G/5G+ network not permitted for unlocked phones
I get excited about the new Samsung S20 Ultra. I go purchase it unlocked because I travel internationally only to learn that unlocked phones are not permitted access to the 5G network...YET... I've been a long time customer of AT&T and pay the same bill as everyone else. Why the second class treatment?
It's not acceptable that I buy a phone advertised to access 5G networks, but because its not an 'AT&T locked phone' I have to wait to access the same network everyone else does. Buying an unlocked phone is not a circumvention of the network. I'll tell you what though... If someone else is going to offer me a 5G network (like Verizon), then maybe I should consider a switch...

This is a common problem across all the carriers right now. Tmobile is the only carrier that 5g actually works on the unlocked phone but its low band 5G so the speeds are the same as LTE at this point. You also have to know that phone does not get WiFi calling on ATT because its unlocked. This happens every time new tech comes out on cellular. ATT only has 2 plans that get 5g right now anyway.

Here’s my situation. I understand unlocked phones from other carriers may not be fully compatible. I’m currently using fully paid off and unlocked Verizon Motorola edge plus 5G on AT&T. I have a 5G SIM card and I’m only receiving 5Ge! I’ve talked to AT&T about the phone and as of now I have my iPhone 12 Pro Max imei in the system because the imei of the moto edge plus won’t allow me to get service. Im curious what I can do to be able to get 5G on this device?

You cannot expect another carriers branded device will work fully on AT&T. Just like another carriers branded device will not work fully on Verizon.
'unlocked' means no carrier branding (like iPhones).
