Prepaid reactivation period after not paying

I have a prepaid phone number for which I get charged by each call/message. If I am not enrolled in autopay and I forget to do a payment I know that my number will not be active. My question is, how long long can I go without paying so that I don't loose my phone number? Or does it remain my number until y pay again?
