impossible to activate BYOD $300/1yr 8GB prepaid plan

I signed up for the promotional $300/1yr 8GB prepaid plan.  (Upon payment, I was only charged for the SIM card, and none of my confirmation emails even indicate that I have signed up for this plan.)

The SIM card arrived, but there is no way to activate the plan.

  • The information that came with the SIM card only includes activation codes for the non-promotional plans.
  • Trying to activate online at https://www.att.com/prepaid/activations/#/activate.html does not work.  After submitting the requested information, there is an error at the top of the page "GA701 : Oops, we hit a snag while activating your device. Come back later and try again."
  • It is not possible to activate it by calling 800.901.9878, and it is IMPOSSIBLE to reach a human from that number.

How can I activate this plan?

Hi I had this same exact problem and after hours and hours on hold with customer service, I figured it out. It turns out that when I bought the SIM card with the plan online, the number I was trying to port over was still active with the other phone service I had (like most people I only have one phone, so it's kinda hard to just shut off your phone before waiting for a chip in the mail). Because of this, the number didn't port correctly and the chip was never activated. Skip the customer service number all together and call the ATT port service at (888) 898-7685 to port your number. This will deactivate your old phone service chip and activate the new ATT chip but it will not have a plan on it so you can't make calls on it. You have to use someone else's phone to call the payment specialist line at (866)608-3007 to then have them charge you $300 and afterwards you should be good to go. This is the only way to make this work, but at least you can avoid hours on hold with ATT customer service like I had to do.

Hi there @RagtimeTime,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

When purchasing the promo plan, you're supposed to be charged the $300 prepay fee. If you only paid for the SIM card, then you would need to purchase the 8GB Promo Plan.

Hope this helps!

I did select the promo plan (I recall it saying before I checked out that the plan was not eligible for autopay).  Ultimately when my order went through, I was only charged for the SIM, so I assumed the $300 charge would be incurred when I activated the SIM and the plan.  Now I have a SIM that I cannot activate that plan on, and I cannot order a new one because my phone number is now showing that it can't be ported (must be tied to the SIM that I have).

This was my experience, but I only got through the first 3 steps.

I had the same exact scenario happen to me (Charged around $5 and sim sent to me. can't activate it online).

Try calling someone at 800-901-9878 to activate and purchase the plan (You will need to provide credit card again for $300+tax).

Greetings @ragtime Time,

Thanks for providing us with that information. Have you checked your bank account to verify that you've been charged for the $300/ 1yr 8GB prepaid plan?

Also, in regards to porting your number over did you check the Number Transfer/Port Status portal. Feel free to let us know to better assist.

I too, am dealing with this issue. It is IMPMOSSIBLE to get a human on the phone to deal with this. my number is in limbo and i cannot find a straight answer to my questions! Someone please assist!

I when i checked out, it said 300 plus tax plus a sim card for my BYOD. But all i was ever charged for was the sim card. Not even a phone number for support was on the reciept. I sure would love to take advantage of this amazing offer, but when your phone tree continually hangs up on me and wont let me speak to a human, it's incredible infuriating.

Re: impossible to activate $300/1 yr 8GB prepaid plan

I have the same terrible experience!  When I checked out, it is said $300 plus a sim card for the total expense. But when I checked my bank account, AT&T didn't charge the $300 but only charged the SIM card expense. You can never reach a human on the phone with the number provided in the prepaid card instruction, it's ridiculous!  I also tried to do live chat on AT&T, but no one shows up, everything is self-service 😞   End up, I went to two At&t stores to get help & the answers are "call the prepaid customer service line", they can do nothing about it!   So, NO ONE from AT&T can help me out!  It's very frustrated!  What number can I call to talk to a "person" in AT&T to solve this problem?

1)  Dial 611 from cell

2)  Press 0

3)  Say you have sim card and want 300$ annual 25$  8GB plan

4)  They will be confused, so tell them as little as possible

5)  Repeat 3 times

6)  You will reach someone who knows how to port your number in and activate it,       thats why you cant do it online but no one knows this. *Port required

Most ridiculous deal ever. My number is stuck to their stupid sim card and they don't set up your account. AT&T should be sued for playing this scamming trick. Already in touch with a (Edited per community guidelines). So frustrating.
