It is called postpaid service, not contract. ATT does not do service contracts anymore. Yes, it is possible. Best to go to an ATT corporate store to do it.

Since we are in pandemic going out only when necessary should be away to do on line or on phone especially for seniors

Only way I know to do this fully online is to port to another carrier then port back. A big hassle.
But unless you want more complete international roaming coverage, the ability to add a wearable to the account, or the ability to buy a phone on a Device payment plan there isn't really many benefits to going postpaid.
