Unlocking prepaid iPhone

I have had my prepaid plan close to a year. I am on the auto pay. I submitted a request to unlock my iPhone 7 Plus but was denied. They said I had a balance due. Don’t know how that could be as I am on the auto pay. Please advise me on what should I do to get my phone unlocked. Thank you

Where did you buy the phone? Was it second hand? It sounds like the phone hasn’t been paid off by the original owner.

I bought it from an individual. But I was on an att wireless plan then changed to a prepaid because it was cheaper. They told me at the att store there were no issues with phone such as it was not stolen nor did it have any kind of balance owed on it.
