Unlocking a AT&T prepaid phone

Hi!

my friend was given a AT&T prepaid phone, no sim, just the phone and they want to unlock it so they can add a different carrier SIM card! But the email asking to confirm unlocking just says unlock your phone.

no link, no confirmation or anything other then the page saying unlock your phone and when I try to click again it says not been confirmed! I heard it takes about 48 hours to confirm and all that, but I just wanna make sure that this is what I’m suppose to do?
already tried calling, it sent me in a loop after I talked to a nice lady on the phone for help, they tried sending me to another line.

UNLOCK REQUIREMENTS

  • Your device isn’t reported lost or stolen, or involved with fraud.
  • You must complete your contract or installment plan (including early termination fees). Or, pay off an installment plan early and then make another unlock request in 24 hours.
  • Your device isn’t active on another AT&T account.
  • If you upgraded early, wait 14 days to unlock your old device. Business customers wait 30 days.
  • Your service must be active for at least 60 days with no past due or unpaid balance.
  • AT&T PREPAID (formerly GoPhone®) devices must have at least 6 months of active service.
  • If you’re military, we’ll ask you to email your TCS or PCS (Temporary / permanent change of station) documents for eligibility. You won’t have to complete installment plans or contracts.
  • If you have a business-owned device, your company must authorize you to unlock it.
  •  Go here if your phone meets all the requirements
  •  https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/
  • AT&T reserves the right to deny any unlock request that it concludes would result in an abuse of this policy or is part of an effort to defraud AT&T or its customers. AT&T further reserves the right to alter this unlocking policy at its discretion without advance notice.

So there’s no way? I’ll see and wait for a unlock, as we have no idea if it was in fraudulent or anything like that, no unpaid balances (maybe, have no idea it was given to my friend)! If not might have to go get a new phone, thank you!

Hey there @Saico, we understand wanting your friend's device unlocked and we'll be happy to point you in the right direction.

The device will have to match all the unlock requirements that @Constructive listed in order to be eligible. Additionally, since your friend got this device from a third-party, they'll need to reach out to the original owner of the phone and have them submit the unlock request instead.

Thanks for reaching out to the AT&T Community Forums.
